I really wanted the nitro, however the fact i have to put credit/debit card information to receive it is stupid. Why is it called free when I can't get it for free? Why do I have to put my card information? It's not like I have my own card, so it sucks honestly.

It's a free trial subscription, like the trial memberships here. Those automatically renew if not canceled so require a payment method. That's apparently the method that Discord decided to use for this promotion.
