I play against my dad a lot, we are about at the same level but he beats me most of the time. He doesn't study tactics, only practices by playing against a computer and at the same time he takes his queen out way early and kicks my ass with it.

 

I really want to become better than him.

 

 

What's my course of action?

It is impossible to consistently beat your dad. Only Freud knows why that is. Whenever you play him your ELO drops to around 100 below his. No matter how high it is when you play others.

Experienced it myself. For some miracolous reason I hung 2 rooks against my dad in one game! Something like that never happens to me when playing others.

Read 'How to beat your dad at chess'. Actually, that book has nothing to do with beating your dad at chess, but it does contain important mating combinations that are fun to learn, and who knows, it might help you beat your dad at chess.
