Beginner 1.e4 Openings
I like opening with 1.e4 when I play white. Usually my opponent will respond with 1...e5. Then I always play 2. Nf3. If my opponent plays 2...Nc6 I always open with the Italian Game because that
well, you need to have a plan against what to do if your opponent doesn't play e5.
But I would try getting your opponent into the max lange attack. (1.E4 e5 2.nf3 nc6 3.bc4 nf6 4.d4! at your level many people with play the trap moves, it takes a little memorization but it is really good if your opponent play e5, nc6

is all I really know. Is there another opening besides the Italian that you guys recommend to someone that's been playing for a little more than a year? I really want to learn to play reasonably well. Thank you.
After e4 e5 nf3 nc6 try Bb5. The Ruy Lopez is one of the best and popular openings in chess for white.
What is the idea behind the Ruy Lopez that white should be aware of?
It depends on how different of a position you would like to achieve out of the opening. If you go with the d4 recommendation it will be an entirely different approach to the opening/middlegame, whereas the scotch gambit/max lange attack would be more similar to what you play now. King's gambit and ruy lopez games would be a bit different than scotch gambit/max lange attack but would adhere more to your typical opening habits than would 1.d4.
Thanks very much Neil. I am going to try the Ruy using the the d4 recommendation. Thank you very much guys.
I am going to try the Ruy using the the d4 recommendation.
You are welcome but I am not sure what you mean to say since the Ruy and the d4 recommendation were 2 different openings.

The Rooey Lopes.
There are a couple cousins of the Italian Game where you can often get in f4 by around the 5th move and try for a center or King-side attack: The Vienna game (1 e4 e5 2 Nc3 and usually 3 Bc4) and the Bishop's Opening (1e4 e5 2 Bc4 then usually 3 d3 and sometimes 3 or 4 Nc3, transposing into a Vienna), in both cases holding off Nf3 until you move the f-Pawn to f4. Sometimes your opponent castles K-side early and you can castle Q-side with almost all your pieces directed at his K-side castle and launching a Pawn Storm becomes great fun!
