Beginner level and chess engines

After a beginner finishes analyzing his/her game should an engine be used to find the best move afterwards or is it better for a beginner to never use an engine period?

Use it to find tactical mistakes.

Use it with an open and critical mind in other situations, and set it to show you its top few moves, not just 1 move.

widely debated roman.  but my experience is that I'm MUCH better off looking at my games myself, critically.

what went wrong?  what can I learn from this game?   is there technique I didn't know or am I making the same kinds of mistakes game after game?

If I have a handful of obvious issues why do I need to scrutinize the tactical complications made by a 3000 rating Know-it-all?

look at the lines the computer gives a few moves, but ignore the evaluation. If it goes into some deep tactically justified nonsense ask yourself relaistically if you wouldve seen this stuff in the game. If instead you react with oh duh yeah i should have seen that then this is a sign you dont analyze enough while playing. If the computer gives an evaluation when there dont seem to be any terribly relevant tactics involved, and you dont understand it, the computer is actually wrong. Try playing the position out vs the computer in that line, with both sides. Unless you are very strong then you will lose both of them. so that would suggest that both sides are winning and losing. But you would learn something eprhaps about the nuances in the position, and it might adjust your evaluation. If instead you actually find yourself winning against the computer with the side you thought had the advantage and the computer disagreed...or if not winning simply getting a more clear advantage, when you can feel pretty secure that you evaluate things better than the computer. That does happen for me now and then.

Your answer makes absolutely perfect sense. Thank you for your help.

My experience with chess engines is that they are a tool for checking your work. You should not try to use them unless you are at a level that they will not poison your progress as a player.
