beginners question about four centre squares
You both fight for the center. You might not get all four squares, but you try to get as much as you can (Without blundering, of coarse).
after watching many videos and reading books teaching the basics all state that the you must acquire the four centre squares to achieve a winning posture on the board -- well every game i play the other guy tries to take those also and it is impossible to get them if both of you are after them ----- so what gives with this advice ? if getting the four squares is impossible since the other players probably read and saw the same videos and books -- how is that obtainable in a real setting ????? someone please explain ???
Playing to occupy the center gives your pieces the most available moves/options before you aim to bring your major pieces into play. When both players are playing reasonably well, complete control of the center is unlikely. Instead of focusing on complete control of the center as THE goal, take what you can get, so that you give yourself the best position possible, before you move onto the next phase of the game.

Center is the American spelling. Other English speaking countries spell it centre. Either way, control of the central squares is a strategic imperative in chess.
thanks all for the explaining of what gives with CENTRE -- those squares still mystify me but i will see about this flank move someone mentioned from the rear hummmmmmmmm

"you must acquire the four centre squares to achieve a winning posture on the board"
++ 3 of the 4 centre squares is an advantage. Try to control at least 2.
"the other guy tries to take those also" ++ Of course. If both play well, both get 2.
"so what gives with this advice ?" ++ Do not let the other guy take 3 of the 4.
"how is that obtainable in a real setting ?"
'No violent attack can succeed without controlling at least two of these squares,
and possibly three. Many a manoeuvre in the opening has for its sole object the control of the centre, which invariably ensures the initiative.' - Capablanca
