In closed positions a knight is sometimes better than a rook i believe

How do you see into the future...seriously...just calculate all possible variations...and the one who can calculate and recall the most possibilities has the upper hand?
I can see maybe 1 move ahead...3 or 4 moves ahead for a single piece...then if I start working on another possibility/ piece...by the time I have gotten to 2 moves into that possibilities future...I've forgotten the 1st piece and it's string of possibilities...
...then I end up just moving any old thing...or at least something that allows me to live one more move
What do you think? When is good to use an exchange sacrifice? And when is this bad? In what type of positions? Any ideas and suggestions?
