Easy to think of counter-examples. Various drugs? Stalin?

No, there are no benefits. Chess is just a waste of time, a kid´s game you know.

Whenever I feel I am surrounded by stupid people, I come here to play chess to remind myself that I am also stupid.  Humbling is a benefit.

You dont have to play chess to be humble buddy, there are many other kid games.

Supposedly it helps the elderly ward-off dementia.  I also helps develop concentration and mental calculation abiliyties at all ages. Like anything else, it should not be taken in such large doses that it interferes with experiencing as many aspects of life as you'd like.

do you REALLY believe it helps with dementia?

NOT convinced.  my chess playing friend got bad dementia before he died?  I know that not scientific proof of anything... but Read what Mr Sorrow says a little more closer.

to a point I think he's right.

in the grand scheme of things chess is NOT important.

I'll give you that its good practice for concentration.  the point is whether that has any solid medical benefit...

a social equaliser , the person playing you may be a billionaire and yourself struggling to survive , but this counts for nothing in chess when both get the chance to test each other in as fair a way as possible
