As black defend 1 e4 e5 and 1 d4 d5, as white open 1 e4.

keep it simple for now.

1.Nf3,... 2.g3,... 3.Bg2,... 4.0-0,...

then decide which center pawn you want to advance, develop the other knight and bishop.

find a safe square for your queen and put your two rooks on squares that attack or defend something. Now concentrate on not giving away free pieces. stay even in material and don't move the pawns in front of the king.

study as much as you can about rooks and pawns endgame. they will happen 50 % of the time regardless of openings and middlegame. these are general ideas you must always make reasonable responses based on your opponents play.

If you buy a book, I highly recommend Levy Rosman's (GothamChess) book. It is actually quite good for a beginner or intermediate. A lot of visuals and he covers openings for white and black.

Otherwise, watch youtube videos. You'll find your favorites.
