Magnus is still only 34.
He could still be the best player in the world ten years from now.

Magnus would have to come out of his semi-retirement and start taking chess very seriously again. Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? No.

And even if that happens, 10 years is a long time.

#61: I would be very carefull going so far to history. According to some sources, most of Grecós “games” was actually analysis. The same may apply for others 1400- 1700

Anybody who asks “who is best ever” should give some criterion, because it is not quite fair and sensible to compare players from different eras. I have my own: how much best player overcome second best player in the world in match. Considering this, the best IMO is Morphy. He defeated clearly second best player in that time Adolf Anderssen 8:3, which is 73%-27%. When Carlse played Caruana, it was 50:50.

Fisher defeated Spassy convincingly, but on the other hand, he did not defeated his title even once. I know, because he quit chess, but it is his fault, not others players. How fair is to say that Fischer is better than Kasparov, who was champion five times?

A lot of greats in sports keep going in and out of retirement and taking breaks and so on. And still being at or near the top when they come back.
Happens with acting too.
When you get rich you want time off whatever made you rich.
Including to attend to family and things like that.
Many who are the best at what they do well they've 'made it' financially but that isn't the point.
They didn't make it because of chasing the money.
They like what they do.

I think the extreme case is professional boxing.
Rich champions wanting another big fight.
How could it possibly be worth it to take some more of the heaviest punches that can be thrown to chase some more bucks?
It isn't. But people do it.

Not defended title of course

Magnus Karlsen is the best

borovicka75
Sorry but i dońt know player with this name

Bobby Fischer is the best. Magnus Carlsen is the strongest due to engines. I think out of 50 games Magnus would win 30 against Fischer.

Players who said Gotham really need to visit a psychologist. A random IM who have a channel full of clickbates and UPPERCASED tittles of single words definitely isn't even top-100 of best players.

ftr i never said gothamchess is the best but i have (blind) hope that he can become the best because of his potential

Regarding who the most overestimated players are
I'd say Fischer is the most overestimated and Karpov the most underestimated.
Other greats got and get about the right amount of recognition?
Lasker and Botvinnik are both somewhat underestimated.
Keres probably underestimated.

#80: I completely agree about Fischer and Karpov. Lasker was WCh so long because he was clever choosing opponents which had horrible score against him. And Botvinnik was WCh so long because of rematch rule. He lost or draw matches as WCh but won rematches.
