"Tastes like a tub of piss somebody farted in"

as for me...probably the opening scene of "Righteous Kill" where Al Pacino says somethin about Bobby Fischer.

Searching for Bobby Fischer was also a good movie! A righteous kill got to check it out!
The Seventh Seal, is a wonderful choice, and Becket's a clever choice
Edit: This edit is three years after my above opinion was posted. I no longer think the "The Seventh Seal" is a good movie
Searching for Bobby Fischer is a classic call.
The Mighty Pawns is great, watched it in high school with my chess team.
The Seventh Seal is my pick - classic cinema and philosophical and stuff. :)
For plays, I have to say Endgame though, by Sam Beckett.
Blade Runner doesn't have a chess theme really, just a chess scene.
I don't know about that, theoreticalboy. With the notion of man's creations overcoming him, I think chess was a relevant theme.
Chess isn't the theme but has a cameo role in The Game (1997) a creative film with Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, and Deborah Kara Unger.
I'll never forget the first time I watched The Game. Stories like this are the reason why movies were invented.

I can go along with that. Though it seems in most of the choices mentioned so far, chess is less a theme, than a quite magnificent vehicle for the realization of a theme. Ah, chess, your metaphorical splendours abound...
I believe my favorite is Fresh!
