...I don't think you're going to become a strong player at chess by... Uh... Not playing chess.

So you want to learn chess by not playing chess.

good luck with that.

expert tip: chess is not worth it.

if you are still interested in playing, i'm afraid that you should probably not have bought anything, considering that you know "nil". i guess that the best thing for a starter would be to have a friend teach you the basics and go over some of your games sometime.

What do you mean with "knowing nil about chess"?

Do you know how to move pieces, what is a checkmate, castling, etc? There is namely a difference between knowing absolutely nothing about chess and knowing the basics (knowing how to move pieces and the goal of checkmating the opponent).

Have you found the study plans yet?  Pretty comprehensive (roll your mouse pointer over "learn" in the top green ribbon bar).  Unfortunately chess is not an easy game and requires a variety of skills.  Lots of beginner videos and the Chess Mentor courses can get you on the right path as well.  There are some very well done courses that give a nice easy introduction to tactics, openings, and strategy that were among the more recent offerings.  Don't be afraid to "click around" the site and do some exploring on your own.  Maybe You'd like the youtube videos; they're geared towards beginners and are short and to the point (listed under "more").  Good luck.
