Best ways to improve as a beginner?

Hi, I'm fairly new to the world of chess and really just have the basics down- the common initial starting move of your pawn in front of your king to go 2 squares forward, then defend with your knight etc. I know there are so many different variations to start with, and I have no clue when it comes to middle games and end game tactics. I was wondering what's the best way to start learning without getting overwhelmed by all the new information? is there a book you can recommend, for example? Or certain particularly useful openings to start with? How did you guys start to effectively learn chess?

Dont focus on openings, instead focus on principles like what you said, develop your knight to protect your center, try not to block your bishops in, protect your king i.e. castle early. Eventually youll notice reoccurring themes like when a knight and bishop team up on f3 of f7 vie ng5 or ng4 etc. (then play h3 or h6) study pawn breaks when you feel like youve got the basics down and study basic endgames which you will need to know to be able to convert middle games. If you are comfortable with endgames you can try to build your middlegame skills.

Tactics puzzle at a place like chesstempo.

Basic chess theory book like Simple Chess by Stean. A solid end games book like Silman's.
