Better opening for Black than the French Defense.

As black, I only know the French defense against e4. But it is starting to feel really shitty against higher-rated opponents.

Time to bite the bullet and try some Sicilian.

Sicilian. Benoni could be too risky. try Caro kann or pirc

the sicilian Nadjorf. it's one of the most played for a reason. when you learn it you'll win games while having fun.

French defense is fine.

Bd3 is inaccurate:

If you like the french, you should learn how to play it better.

I recommend the gingerGM DVD on the french.

There are better defenses than the French, but so far I have not found any defenses that are as much fun to play as the French.

If high rated players are beating you too much  when you play the French, then play the Sicilian (or 1...e5) against them and the French against lower rated opponents.

I don't want to lose, but for me, chess is also about having fun while playing.

     Just thinking...

French defense is at par with Sicilian, Carokann, Petroff, etc. There are no better openings than the French... just other choices for variety sake. Try the Carokann if you dislike the temporary bad bishop in French.

Get your rating back down to 200 again, like you did when started playing blitz, and maybe the French Defense will work better there wink.png

Bd3 is the Milner Gambit, and it's a line. It's hard to play for black, I'd say.
