Birthday coming, chessbase?

Hello! I'm 1500 rated but determined and have an enormous passion for the game.

My dad wants to buy me something chessrelated. I was thinking chessbase? Is this something? Which package, which extra things should i wish for? They have a supermegapack for 260 pounds but that might be overkill for a leiman? Greatful for answers!

I think chessbase is great. IMO anything more than the basic package is overkill for an amateur.

I don't know that it would be my first choice though. For that amount of money you could get a few really good books. Some sites offer databases... I see you're a premium chess.com member. I believe they offer a database correct?

If you really intend to stay with the game, then Chessbase will sooner or later be a big part of your toolbox. So why not get started earlier, if it suits the gift budget?

First time purchase is outrageously expensive, and the program has some quirks and is quite badly documented. But it is powerful.

I recommend you purchase a how-to-book with it, there is one called "Chessbase Total" or something, published by Russell. In the long run it will save an awful lot of time of what you can do with CB and how to actually do it. Unless you have a masochistic streak and want to learn it all by yourself, like I did (still learning...). But that was before that book came out.
