The silly article is the product of years of "identity politics."  Next we will have feminists complain that the Queen is referred to as a chess man.

No. Nobody cares about that. I am a feminist, I am in feminist circles. I am also in chess feminist circles. DO YOU THINK ANYBODY CARES. You have wrong ideas about what feminist are

Same as this, we don't care about the color of pieces, this was ONE game, where there was a symbolic anti-rascist gesture, but it isn't implying that chess is rascist, IT EXPLAINS SO IN THE VIDEO

SILLY SUBJECT FROM THE NARROW MINDED, using silly political correctness SUGGESTING racism against chess have nothing better to do?!

Do I have to explain it with apples? This was not suggesting chess was rascist, it was just a nice symbolism. Is this so hard to understand?

Hey yeah, explain it with apples!

Ok

Some people (Those are who are usually refered to as rascist) think that race, or specifically, being white, should grant an advantage

While chess wasn't made with this in mind, it does have a funny coincidence around that, with having white and black pieces, and the "advantage" of whites starting

So, this two famous chessmen made a game where black started, just as a funny gesture showing that color doesn't grant advantage. They do not, howerer, plan on changing rules, or suggesting that chess was rascist, is just a message to those who actually believe race matters somehow

You are acting like if we were going to play like this from now on forever, and that is not true

Also, I like apples. We should all gather someday and eat an apple pie, does that sound good? (I'm honestly tired of all this senseless disscussion, let's just eat an apple pie and drink tea while playing chess please...)

And that's the first sensible thing you (or anybody around here) has said!

That is true. Can we end this right here? Let's agree to a draw lol

Since chess was invented in India where people are naturally intermediate in color between black and white, I doubt that advantaging the white pieces by giving them the first move could have had any racist significance.

ANOK1

no one can prove where chess was invented though , so it could be from atlantis as that's just another guess isn't it ,

someone has to go first , and white was chosen for this role , is that racist ? no , ask any Sicilian player why black is best , even if white gets the first move

Okay, on to the next topic:  Carlsen and Giri are playing a game of chess to end mental retardation.

Does the player with the lower IQ get to move first?

As a question. Did they also move the board round? If they didn't, everything would have been positioned, wrong.

The actual message was to "change rules" about "colour granting advantage".

it was not suggesting that the advantage enjoyed by white people in life had been mirrored in the rules of chess and that changing the pieces moving first is necessary.

I'm not saying it was a completely effective campaign because there are connotations that have been unavoidable and clearly it was too nuanced a message for a lot of people to understand, but it's sad and worrying to see so many people get upset about a campaign meant to bring attention to equality issues in world where we've got racist world leaders and people being shot for their ethnicity.

for the record I've been enjoying playing as black moving first in the magnus app.

Re-posting this from the Comments for the News article about the video...

Here are two screenshots to prove that a lot of posters either misconstrue the video on purpose or they lack basic comprehension skills.

It is so dumb. White pieces don’t move first. A person playing with white moves first. That person can be of any color.
irochka2019
Don’t forget that King and Queen should replace each other.
irochka2019
If they insist on pointing out discrimination, they should explain that first move advantage starts to matter only for ratings above 1,800 if not higher. So, before someone is far above average, there are no excuses
irochka2019
I’m sure everyone knows that if a player with black prepares for the game better than the player with white, first move advantage becomes irrelevant

I saw a video where Carlsen and Giri try to fight racism by having black move first for a change.

That video is beyond stupid. Black in chess has nothing to do with racism, and black doesn't move second because of a racist angle to it.

Both sides in chess are equal, and white moves first because someone had to and thats how the rule came to be.

Remember chess invented in India in ancient times when they probably never knew that there are other races in the world besides Indians. While I know that rules have changed but white has always moved first.

The pieces could have been red and yellow with red to move first, and that would be racist to the chinese people?

This is stupid, and the videos attach an unnecessary stigma to the rules of chess and frankly see racism where none exists.

this is the same as the Ice Bucket Challenge, it has no point in itself but the donations in popular way makes it logical

and yes i agree with the "It's illogical to bring racism into the chess board" and stuff but theyre simply using it's popularity to give a message

How does swiching colours remove racism?

If white moving first is racism, then black moving first is also racism.

What is to be done?

Have all pieces be white/black/non-racist colour and have a symbol for each side?

Now that just sounds plain stupid to me.

I have a set with Red and Blue pieces......which color should move first?

Mi_Amigo

well red blue and green make white so certainly you shouldn't move at all
