Black to Play and Win with 1...g5

The title should have been "g6" for sure lolo

I bought a book in 1988, by Andrew Soltis IGM.   And I am wondering if there is  name for it now, black's first move 1.....g6.  Its a very interesting. Here is acouple excerpts from his book.

There are very few moves available for black on his first turn that can be played against anything white does. Chief among them is the dynamic double-edged 1....g6. But it took a long time for 1...g6? to be recognized as a playable move, let alone the key to an entire system.

The presumptuous title, black to play and win with 1...g6, is not used to mislead you. Black is playing g6 to unbalance the position---to strive for a fighting defence where the stronger playercan prevail---or the weaker player, if he knows what he is about, can have winning chances from black side!

I never touched the book after i bought it, but now that I have returned to chess am very interested in it and wonder if others have an opinion?? Ghost

Against 1. e4, 1... g6 is known as the Modern or the Robatcsh. It's a great system to use, and is quite flexible - although you have to be able to play well against white having an overwhelming center at first.

Thank you very much for your replys, thats what I wanted to know.

I am going to try it out against my good friend in our on line game, should be very interesting?

The defense is certainly good and sometimes unbalancing, but always remember: these hypermoders setups are rather hard to play. You have to be very flexible and adjust your plan after every W move. Tons of different structures can arise and you need a deep understanding to navigate among the various positional decisions. Another thing to say is that W can try a direct attack against your king in quite a few ways, so if you're a "safety first player" this might not be the right choice.

That said, if you manage to develop a feeling for the resulting positions then this chamaleontic defence can serve you very very well.

Dario, Thanks, you are so right about the g6, I have only gone through the first two pages  and all the side play that can divert from the main line is already quite over whelming for a player at my level. I really feel I could learn this quite well if I had a teacher at expert level, but tryiny to grasp it on my own will be interesting. Will give it a try

You must be a very strong player without even looking at your rating, because you discribed this opening to a "T"!

One last thing, I really like your signature picture, with the rainbow in the back ground, that is a very attractive tree!     I would bet people, artis have painted that tree many times! You must live in a beautiful area.  Ghost=Bob

I'm not strong at all Laughing the fact is that i have a definite liking for hypermodern stuff and i have tryed to play things like g6. I have experienced your very same "this is overwhelming" sensation. My personal idea is that only after a long experience with related setups (pirc, benoni, KID, hippo and so on) you can really say you know what's happening on the board. I hope one day i will return to my beloved hypermodern setups as a better player, but for now i stick to a rather classical repertoire.

Thanks for the kind words Bob, the tree in the picture is indeed beautiful. It's a Baobab, not exactly a common Italian tree ;) I don't know where the foto has been taken, but i really like it. It's simple and beautiful.
