That the visually impaired can be strong chess players is no secret. Does anyone, however, have any experience with teaching the visually impaired? The reason I ask is that I am starting a chess club with a beginner's session at a disability charity and am worried about the practicalities of teaching the visually impaired. Apart from 'just go for it', which I will be doing , any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well you'd probably want to let them use one of those "braille" sets where they can feel and distinguish the pieces.

I often used to play league against the Braille club here. I think your biggest problem is going to be finding training material (Books, software) for visually impaired.

Fide has some Blind chess association, I know that because some of the local club players here regularly play in official blind Olympiads. Maybe look on the Fide Website.

A quick search found this software:

which is suitable for blind players.

Good luck !

Hello Friends,

I am pleased to announce the release of Winboard 4.5 for JAWS. This is the first advanced Chess program for the blind and persons who can not use a mouse. We are happy to have released an update just days ago. The program uses the JAWS screen reader, the most popular reader for the blind, to recite the moves and other board conditions. It can connect to ICS servers such as FICS and ICC and provide chess engine opponents and analysis. Winboard 4.5 for JAWS is free and available at the Winboard forum here, http://www.open-aurec.com/wbforum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=51528&start=1
