Is it necessary to learn how to play blindfold chess in a chess career like mine?

Not unless you plan to lose your eyesight.

Probably not, but being able to play it is a good sign.

Some humble drops on your eyes should help you visualize the board with eyes closed, a blunt would also help.

I think for most people they can just do it after a while, it's not something they train to do specifically. Same for e.g. remembering the color of the squares.

If you keep playing, analyzing, and studying you'll eventually be able to.

How people play blindfold chess so well just amazes me.  I can do 2 games at once, and anything after that, the games just become a jumbled mess after about 6 moves.

I think the key phrase in the question is "in a chess career like mine". Truth is that nobody here knows what your chess career is like. But if your rating is anything to go on, I would say that playing blindfold shouldn't be a concern at this point. I would concentrate on getting better at chess in general. If you do, and in the long term, you will be get better at blindfold chess automatically as your overall standard improves.

Not to brag, but since I was a beginner I found blinfold chess quite easy, at least remembering where the pieces are, but not the game itself!

Yeah, I think some new players can actually do it, at least if the position doesn't get too messy.

Right now I am still able to, but only with my eyes closed. Someone has to tell me the moves so I cant play Blinfold chess here on chess.com.

They should implement some Siri thing.

i think it could be useful in improving visualization. If you ever need to go through long variations in your head being able to play BlindfoldChess will make you much more accurate. However, I have only ever played about 4 or 5 blindfold games since I learned to play chess so I can't speak from experience.

How many chess addicts does it take to change a light-bulb?

Answer: they won't change it. They will play blindfold.

Sometimes when calculating a long tactic I shut my eyes so I can do it better (in a game or during puzzle solving).

I'm not anything special at blindfold though.

There was some story about a tournament where the lights went out in the whole building, and people stopped their clocks.

The guy writing the story said he could still hear his clock though... his opponent hadn't stopped it. After a few minutes he realized his opponent was still thinking. A few minutes more and his opponent lit a match, and stared at the board while it flickered out, thought for a while longer, then made a move or offered a draw or something... I don't remember the end of the story tongue.png

NICE!!

I made this joke in 2001, when I used to troll in FICS, as MarcoBR (you can check if you want).

I am happy this joke is not a "total" joke, hahahah.
