blitz

It's not a rating thing it's a human thing. Humans get good at what they practice.
If a top GM played blitz all day and didn't do their usual work and study they'd be worse than their peers pretty quickly.

I dunno. Nakamura is an example of someone who used to do just that and has gotten better instead of worse. About 10 years ago, you'd find him on ICC at all hours of the day playing blitz and especially bullet. If I remember correctly, he'd gotten up to 3600 in bullet? Anyway, that was while he was still in the high 2600s to low 2700s. And he did say he was quitting online play so much to focus on real chess, but while he was playing online so much his performance never faltered OTB.
Remember these guys don't have (normal) jobs though. Chess is their job. If they're goofing off for hours a day with blitz that doesn't necessarily mean they aren't putting in 40 hours of serious work a week.
