Bullet is a true sport. Most people dent that real chess is a sport.
If you can play a game while sitting in a chair, you don't break a sweat and you aren't breathing hard, then it's not a sport.
Now you are dismissing competitive shooting.

I'd consider that to be a game or a hobby, not a sport. Same as playing darts or pool/billiards.
Was looking through the latest Informant. There are quite a few online blitz games in there. If they are publishable in Informant, there is no doubt they are chess. I don’t care what Fisher says. Actually, I’ve never cared about Fischer’s opinions (except his concrete analysis of chess positions—there Fischer is useful).
Now
Depends what you define "chess"
Different types of chess results in different skills and in the end you need to learn all of it
You can be amazing at rapid, but if you get into time trouble you'll need bullet and blitz skills to help
Now, bullet and blitz as it's own is fine
Bullet requires fast thinking + blundering less
Blitz isn't even that bad flagging wise, just play semi decent chess and don't take a minute per move
If you want to get better, you gotta master all time controls, so, yes, it is chess
If you define chess as whatever as long as it has the fundamental rules, it's chess

It sure is interesting that quite a few people think that speed chess is so different from traditional chess that they consider it not chess at all. I think the requirements for each dovetail into that discussion about if chess is a sport.
I don't agree, blitz is chess but bullet IS kind of random......
I see he sayed this, but he sayed true!

There would seem to be some physical skill involved in bullet. As my reflexes are slowing as I age, my skills at one-minute are subpar relative to my capabilities even in three-minute. I often lose on time.

I don't play speed chess because I always lose. But it seems to me the physical skill part of speed chess might be more intense than the physical skill part of darts, pool, or shooting. Which could be why some people say it's so different, that it's not really chess at all.
Maybe the traditional form of chess is just a game, while the speed form of chess is so different that the game part becomes sport-like,

I don't see much correlation between speed chess being real chess and chess being a sport. Just because you are playing a game at a faster pace does not make it a sport. Chess is a board game, just like checkers, backgammon, Monopoly and dominoes are. None of them have ever been called sports. People who consider chess a sport are just wishful thinkers, hoping that it will be broadcast on TV someday and that people will actually pay admission to watch the games and that professional chess players will make as much money as pro basketball and football players. Or maybe they dream of it being an Olympic event some day. Can you picture a stadium filled with 80,000 fans, drinking beer, eating hot dogs and paying $100 a seat to watch a chess game? I certainly can't. The biggest crowd I can imagine for a chess game is about 100 people. Your average Joe Redneck can understand a football or basketball game, however they'd be totally lost watching a Super-GM chess game. Heck, I'm an 1800 player and I'm even lost some of the time. Then you have the athletic debate. Can a game played while sitting down, requiring no muscular coordination or athletic ability, ever be called a sport? Therefore, chess is not a sport and never will be. It's the best dang board game ever made though.
Oh I agree. It's just that there must be a reason some people think speed chess is so different than traditional chess they might consider it not chess at all.
Jeff Green sounds like he has something against the art of Chess in general. Talking about how football is in comparison? The fact that chess is a profession isn't 'wishful thinking' at all, yes it's a board game but this is not exactly snakes and ladders, or guess who, or monopoly, people make money from it. If you want the glitz and glamor of it, you can always watch Queens Gambit on netflix lol.

When you are certain that you comprehend the psychology of an idea held by many people across time and space, it should be equally certain that you do not know what you think you know.

Well, this is my opinion on speed/bullet chess. Most games end with one person flagging (losing on time). You rarely see a checkmate in a 1 minute game. Therefore, it's more about playing fast than playing accurately. Players memorize their opening repertoires, in order to save time on the clock, so they aren't being creative at all but are just copying their favorite elite GM's or computer's openings. Pre-moves add to the problem. People are basically just pre-moving any piece anywhere, just to win on time. Therefore, I don't consider it to be serious chess, which requires deep thought, strategy and knowledge of the game. Speed chess is about 75% speed and only 25% chess, IMHO.
He actually compared Chess to Monopoly, lmao, I'm done.
I know, I know. Monopoly uses dice and cards (luck) and very little strategy, whereas chess is all strategy. My point is that it's a board game, not a sport. Instead of comparing it to Monopoly, let's say it's more like Checkers, Chinese Chess, Go, Othello/Reversi, Hex or Pente instead. Those are all board games that are 100% strategy and no luck. Better?

Chess has nothing to do with go, or checkers. So that's not better. Yes it's not a physical workout, it's a psychological competitive game of intellect, a board game. I get your point but it's not really a point, at most a very small footnote. Even then, a footnote for children. It's not a sport like football or basketball. We know that.
Because it IS, in fact, a board game. Board games aren't sports. There might be an exception, but I can't think of one.
