I am wondering  for some one new to paying seriously is it better to stay away from blitz chess? I am currently reading books, using the tactics trainer compulsively and playing online chess... When I pay blitz chess I just get pounded and really don't even know what happened. Seems like different strategies are used! So is it better to stay away from it for now??

Same thing happens to me :-) Opening Knowledge seems to be the key ingredient to playing blitz chess. At least at the poor standard I play at Embarassed.

Blitz chess can give you lots of experience quickly, however you have to know the openings. Find an opening repertoire you like, you'll find a style eventually, if you haven't already, for closed or open games, tactical or positional play; then play some blitz games, but only after you've thoroughly studied your opening lines. You'll lose a lot at first, like anything blitz requires practice, but you'll find it will strengthen your memory and give you a good feel for positions. Also it's loads of fun!

A lot of people like to scoff at blitz chess, saying it isn't serious chess, etc. but all strong players play blitz and if you take chess that seriously you need to get out more!

Tips for studying the  openings. Go over an opening line (usually a single column in MCO or ECO) repeatedly until you can do it perfectly from memory without having to look at the book. Then go back and look at any footnotes! Also try studying using board and pieces, not just using the computer. I recommend you download the free Chess Position Trainer which you can find under Resources/Downloads above. Here's the link:

Are you allowed to use notes or opening books while playing on chess.com to help learn openings? What is MCO and ECO? thanks for your help...

The answer is yes to your first question and you are also allowed to use data bases. MCO ( Modern Chess Openings) ECO ( Encyclopedias of Chess Openings) BCO ( Batsford Chess Openings) NCO  ( Nunn's Chess Openings)   these are all reference books on chess openings which are like "chess bibles" to many ( if not most) serious chess players. MCO, BCO and NCO are all a single volume reference and all 3 are popular with people usually having their own personal preference. The ECOs are a "set" of 5 volumes and are better but more expensive.  As for the blitz, I dont believe playing a lot of blitz helps your slow game at all, EXCEPT when you and your opponent are both very short of time and forced to play "blitz" at the end of the game. If you want to play better chess play slow chess, as your slow game improves you will also play better blitz.

Hi. Well there are no blitz tournaments yet since this area of the site is still in it's beta stage but here is what you do.

Hover your mouse over "Play" located in the green bar on the upper left corner of your screen.

Click on "Live Chess".

When the new page loads click on "Play Live Chess" and the Live chess area will open up.  There you can play blitz, bullet, and standard chess.

Enjoy!
