Blitz chess

I have two questions regarding blitz chess.

If someone was aiming to eventually get to very high levels (2700+) would it be best to take a long break (months or years) from blitz?

Also, if someone was studying for an average of 1-3 hours per day, would playing blitz (perhaps half an hour) afterward be detrimental to their learning?

Please, serious answers only.

I find this quote interesting.

Playing rapid chess, one can lose the habit of concentrating for several hours in serious chess. That is why, if a player has big aims, he should limit his rapid play in favor of serious chess. ~ Vladimir Kramnik

Well, none of us in the forum are 2700+ so what can we say for sure?

And can any GM say with any honesty that they didn't play blitz at all on their path to GM? I doubt it.

But along with that Kramnik quote, you'll easily find many professionals warning against the dangers of speed play. My interpretation is the main thing is not to let it interfere with your serious chess work. If you're working 8 or more hours a day on chess (1-3 hours seems too light if you're wanting to be 2700) then it's a huge waste to spend a few hours on blitz.

Is blitz afterwards detrimental to learning? Hmm. As with any skill, total immersion is best. I guess the question is does this sort of break or undermine the immersion. I get the feeling it would. I realize blitz is a good way to relax and unwind after a long serious game or study... but I assume ideal is something else... like sports, seeing a movie, a different hobby, etc.

Of course we're talking about someone really serious about improvement here. For us normal players who aren't aiming to be pros I suspect that keeping it fun and motivating is more important in the long term than immersion. What you want is consistent work, every day, for years. I assume no one will do this if they're guaranteed to not making a living from it. So to keep up the work, you'll need to keep it fun. 30 minutes of blitz? I say that's fine.

you can still improve playing blitz games ...

Even though you loose on time  I believe its better to have the winning position ...( fundamentally).

and when ur opponent wins on time with the loozing position  is unknowingly practicing bad standard fundamentals ...

I hope  I made sense .Cool yes u can improve ur chess with blitz  , but the problem is loozing games on time .

Probably doesn't make sense to stop playing blitz permanently. But maybe stuff like 3/0, sure. 5/3 is a great time control if you want to analyze the games afterward.

Blitz is an especially good tool for practicing openings. My former coach, a GM, talked a lot to me about this, and it was one of the best pieces of advice he gave me. Unless you really do have a very very high amount of time to play blitz, you shouldn't be screwing around while doing it; you should be using it to practice your actual lines. Ideally after each game you go back and check to see if you did everything correctly.

Sammy Boi in #5 and DPNorman in #7 for the win.

Also, thank you for the posted quotes by great players, Logozar.

Do as the players do, not as they say.

All of today's elite players play blitz. Most of them play bullet. Quite often, you will find Naka, MVL, Caruana, and others playing blitz online hours before an important game. It warms them up and relaxes them enough to play the games that matter.

Oh, and every single World Champion with the notable exception of Botvinnik played tons of blitz. Yes, that includes Bobby Fischer, Vishy Anand, and Vladimir Kramnik.

im sure botvinnick played blitz sometime in his life.
