Bobby Fischer: a phenomenal role model in youth

Before he lost his marbles Bobby Fischer was an exemplary role model.  He was a living exemplar of talent combined with dedication. He was American and an underdog to the Soviet machine.  His victory in the candidates round against the russians was sparknling. Nobody was a better spokesman for the game than Bobby in his prime, before he lost his marbles. Do you think so too Joe?

Yes. That is exactly the problem with youth today: whenever they come across a difficult obstacle, they actually knuckle down and solve it !?

What are they thinking????? Why can't they just act like a real American, and run away????? Like Bobby ran from Karpov!

Kid these day!!!!

Yeah, he quit school, never got a job, never got a drivers lisence, never got married, and lived off his mommy's social security checks, all so he could push a few pawns in life. No boy scout, no paper route, no altar boy, no summer camp, no senior prom, no other hobbies, no pets. Hell, I don't think he could keep a plant alive for a week, in his apartment. Disqualifed for military service.  Dam impressive if you ask me.

mr cote i like my heroes flawed thank you;  the more u beat down on him the more i sympathize with him;  the above videos are superb thank u zeal and zen

RonaldJosephCote

I'm being kind. You wanted to know what we thought, before he lost his marbles. You don't want to know what I think after he lost his marbles.

HolyFlame777

of course you must cultivate your own opinions, by allmeans, but i prefer the romanticization of a don quijote type, but with genius, that was bobby all the way, he dreamed the impossible dream and made it come true, nobody can take that away from him, ever. got it?

Luvrug

I'll keep it brief and to the point. Bobby Fisher was a good chess player. unfortunately he was an $%ck as well.

There is no doubt that bobby fischer did hold some controversial opinions but as far as I know he never killed any innocent people, which is more than any US government can say by the way. Freedom of speech is supposed to be as American as apple pie, moreover the 1st amendment of the US constitution specifically makes provision for contrary opinions.

Let's cut Bobby some slack and remember him as a chess god ,a genius who we are still talking about 40 yrs on from his greatest triumph, someone who will be discussed long after we are all dead and buried .

RonaldJosephCote

You don't need free speech, or the US constitution. He lived here, but Bobby was NEVER an American. My diatribe in post 4 was restricted to him before he became champion. AFTER he became champion, he refused to pay taxes, and rooted for the terrorist. Let me repeat that. Who in their right minds, ROOTS FOR THE TERRORIST ON 9-11??

Relax RonaldJoseph, Bobby Fischer is no longer with us and so cannot defend himself .Nobody condones terroism by the way ...all I say is that Bobby was used by his country to be a standard bearer in the cold war and in his day Fischer's victory was a great filip for America who were more than happy to acclaim him as an American when he was on top of the world.

We can say that diplomacy was not Bobby's forte but chess certainly was and in that arena he was peerless!.

I don't want you to think I'm angry with you; let me refer 2 books. "Bobby Fischer Goes To War", by David Edmonds and John Eidinow (Harper Collins Publishers),   and  "End Game", by Frank Brady--Broardway Paperbacks.  They cover his entire life, from birth to death. Let's agree to let history judge.

RonaldJosephCote

Personally I never gave any credance to the cold war thing. The media jump on that like icing on a cake. Nixon & Kissenger were carving up South Asia, and laid the ground work for, "detente". Which was a fancy name for the nuclear option. 10 yrs later, Reagan came in with Salt 1, and Salt 2, which allowed us to win the cold war, by pricing the Russians out of the business of war. War is a business, and business is good, and nobody knows how to make war better than Americans.

RonaldJosephCote

I only disagree with your money argument. Bobby didn't make good money. He got about 3 million for the championship. The US government wanted 1 million. It cost him 1 million to make other arangements. You get a $100. speeding ticket. You gonna spend $300 for a lawyer to fight it??

RonaldJosephCote

His mother, and sister helped to put it in a swiss bank account, where he would have access to it, but the gov, wouldn't. The same problem happens in a casino. One day your ship comes in, and you win $5 million dollars. Now how do you get that kind of money out of there safely. Its almost like a drug deal in a shooting galery. The door is allways open to let you in. After the exchange, the trick is to get out safely. Its a chess game!

Bobby never ''lost his marbles''..What is that crap?? USA propaganda tries to make it look like that but fortunately there are people who don't hear and see through blinkers in this world and so when Bobby speaks at his latest interviews they understand quite a few things about the dark backround surrounding him and the manhunt that it was unleashed against him since he started speaking about politics and the corruption of the US goverments( coincidence?) .. And please...don't start the usual: ''He didn't pay his taxes, he wasn't a patriot!!!''or ''He abandoned the States, he was a traitor!'' or " He spoke bad about the Jews, he is a racist'' bla bla bla bla.. All these, are half truths modified to hide the reasons behind the acts and statements of Bobby, and make it appear like '' Bobby lost his marbles''.. It is sad to see victims of the States propaganda here in the chess world..But then again i suppose it is natural.. IMHO only the fact that such a brilliant man ended up hiding, weary ,tired and so mad at the world (well.. half the world) should motivate people to search a bit or to question as to what are the reasons for it instead of repeating: ''Who''?? ''Bobby''?? ''ah he lost his marbles''..'' ah he lost his marbles''..'' ah he lost his marbles''..'' ah he lost his marbles''..'' ah he lost his marbles''..

He still has his "slingshot" thankfully.

Bobby Fischer is the greatest, was the greatest and will forever be the greatest! We love you Bobby and we mourn your passing every day!

RonaldJosephCote

A lot of Americans ARE blockheads, sometimes myself included. The mainstream media is powerful over here. We make mistakes, but most of the time, Americans are trying to do good.

DrFrank124c

The three biggest lies in all of history:

1. The Holocaust

2. Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated JFK.

3. Bobby Fischer was crazy!
