Bobby Fischer chess book collection

Why did Bobby Fischer collect books, even those about himself, if he practically knew everything there was to know about chess? I mean, it seems like he was gone for good after 1975. Was he really that obsessed with this game? I’d like to have a book collection on a single subject, but it seems expensive.

Fischer did not know everything. Maybe he recollected something in some book, but he needed to verify in the book. He did play a revanche match against Spassky in 1992.

Yes, I know he played another match in 1992, but let's be honest. He exhausted all chess extant knowledge. I mean he'd provide more benefit to the chess world if he wrote more books of his own. It's like a PhD Nobel Prize winning professor reading an introductory textbook for freshman in his respective field.

One of the books Fischer studied before his match with Spassky was the red book with all games of Spassky.

The only works he could've really studied were game collections to get new ideas. In that regard, the modern computer databases would've been a major resource in his studying. But we let ourselves be distracted instead of taking advantage of this gold.

Fischer is the greatest student of the game ever, even Tal acknowledged that. Unfortunately, his attention and dedication to the game came at a price, he ever developed proper social skills. It’s infinitely easier today than when Fischer learned in the 50’s and 60’s, anything you want to know about chess is at your fingertips. As a chess enthusiast, I feel cheated that Fischer didn’t continue after 1972. We’ll never know how matches against Karpov and Kasparov would have turned out.
