Haha, this is such awesome hyperbole. I even agree with the point that reserving judgment is not necessarily a virtue, but man did you ever just attach rocket boosters to it and watch it fly way out of sight!

The hyperbole is born of years of tolerating Fischer Worship. Not just from the usual rank and file, but from people who should know a whole lot better, including most chess writers and grandmasters who are on record excusing his comments. 

The spineless USCF didn't do anything until his 9/11 interviews on the radio. By then it was way too little, too late. The wins aren't enough, and had he been French, Chilean, Angolan or Bulgarian we wouldn't be having this conversation - he never would have been made into a chess hero except for the fact that he's an American. 

No arguments: Fischer-worshippers are a pretty intolerable breed, though not nearly so bad as the armchair psychologists featured here and in innumerable other threads.

For the record, I'm no Fischer worshipper -- he said some pretty reprehensible things.  Does it warrant comparisons to Stalin?  Or Himmler?  Or Hitler?  Or the KKK?  (It most definitely does not).

My point was simply that the vilification is as bad as the deification and that where some only seem capable of dealing in absolutes, the world is often painted with shades of grey.

Yeah, that and his unprecedented talent and performance, dominating the field by a margin not seen before or since.  His talking points later in his life have no bearing on his chess record earlier, nor does his chess record have any bearing on the quality of his character.

Sorry, but any credible story about Bobby Fischer torturing animals would be on Google.  Use your head.  There's a lot of things that might not make it into Google searches, but something negative about a "celebrity", dead or alive, will always be on Google.

P.S. Nowhere (ever, in my life) have I said that Fischer should get a pass on anything he said.  Mentally ill or no.

I think that is also in that biography that robotjazz can't produce.  

I heard that Fischer had 3 lungs and the extra oxygen capacity was responsible for his sustained concentration level.  Read it in a book.  Disprove me.

Just another way of making money.. publishing another DSM.. making psychatrists/ psychologists jobs seem more important.. They get paid quite handsomely.. the bio-chemistry research of new medications.. new pharmaceuticals tested and distributed on a mass-scale. 

Pretty great money making operation to "fix" every last thing. I've also taken a college class that suggested psyhological disorders are a product of society not biological.. simply the structure of a culture.
