Its like going to a doctor and the the doctor asks you, 'What's wrong with you?', 'Oh doctor I have a pain in my head' and he sends you to a physiotherapist for your big toe.

right and the Lucena and Philador positions and other rook endings are just what he needs. wow, just wow.

Silman's book emphasizes to the student that the important thing is to master the strictly limited material at hand, rather than get confused by endings that won't help your results at that level. ... I'll also repeat the point that David Ellinger in ChessCafe makes: '[This ...] demonstrates who this book will truly serve best: anybody who coaches chess. (Lucena and Philidor are not in the beginner and 1000-1199 sections.)

More regurgitated opinion masquerading as fact.  He is an 1100 rated player and should be feeding himself on nothing but a diet of pure tactics, everyday, tactics for breakfast, tactics for lunch, tactics for dinner and tactics for a midnight snack not some rehashed Steintz repackaged in one of Silmans insufferable tomes.

De La Maza for anyone under 1400 is worth all of Silman, Seirawans, Heisman and Watsons books combined.  Yeah I said it.  Who will deny it?

Grandma_Rest

Thank you all for your helpful comments, I take them all on board and will study some of the books mentioned, hopefully soon I will come back and be able to recommend books to others!

My aim is to get to around 1600 if possible... I hope this is a realistic target! Thank you again to you all...

Once [the student] is certain that he is familiar with the moves and the notation, he should practice by himself, placing the King in different mating positions. ... we shall begin by giving a few simple mates and simple endings ... many endings are decided by the respective positions of the Kings or the ability of the Kings to march forward toward the centre of the board. The beginner should therefore practice along these lines at every opportunity. ..." - Capablanca's Primer of Chess

Care to say anything about the number of tactics problems that are actually in the de la Maza book?

"... de la Maza ... recommends ... going through a set of 1000 tactcs problems seven times. One might imagine that a suitable set of 1000 positions would then be provided, but no, readers are advised to buy a piece of software ..." - GM John Nunn (2006)

... How to reassess your chess for an 1100 rated player, man you should be reading how to reassess your entire world view and be brought back to reality.

I reproduced a GM Nunn quote that mentioned HTRYC, but that was only to show GM Nunn's contrast between his own view of Silman and the de la Maza view of Silman.

Again, I have browsed through the book. In addition to quoting IM Silman and GM Nunn, I have quoted some of that knight move stuff directly from the de la Maza book. Do you see any reason to doubt that IM Silman and GM Nunn have read it? Is there any dispute about the many pages of de la Maza telling the reader what he is going to do and quoting reader praise of de la Maza? What about the quoted game commentary? Care to say anything about the number of other games?

De La Maza Rapid chess improvement. Don't touch anything by Silman, Heisman, Seirawan or anything else, especially Silman, he will retard your growth.

This advice is garbage.

Right and I am a submarine commander and a world war one flying ace that flew with the Red Barron,  Order a bum feeling and bring yourself back to reality.

Back Yard Professor, high on Silman, tactically inept, conclusion? Silman is useless, let me repeat that, ABSOLUTELY USELESS for players who are tactically unaware, he was so busy looking for imbalances that he failed to recognise when he was getting mated in one. Hilarious! oh but the imbalances in the position, Neeeeeext!

And Krammnik missed a mate in 1.  If you arent high on Silman, so are others.  But to say he is gargbage, and ignore him, AND study de la maza;s book?  To each his own i guess/
