What happens if my and opponent time runs out otb chess? Is it a draw? Or the one who accuses first win? LOL

Lagomorph

Only one of you can run out of time first. It is in the nature of the chess clock....only one runs at any time.

That is an interesting question because the answer has not always been the same.

Back in the day, the game did not end when the flag fell... it ended when a player made claim that his opponent's flag had fallen. That meant that the player whose flag fell first could claim a win when his opponent's flag fell - or that checkmate could be administered after the flag had fallen if it had not been claimed.

The current FIDE rule is that the game is drawn if there is no sure way of determining which flag fell first otherwise the player whose flag fell last is the winner.

It doesn't arise at top level chess because the clock is monitored by an arbiter whose job it is to end the game the moment a flag falls.

Of course someone’s clock has to run out first before the other, so if you claim that your opponent times has run out before yours has than you get the win. But if you aren’t paying attention to the fact that your opponents time has run out and than your time ends up running out than it’s a draw.

From my knowledge, @NMRhino is correct. I've never had this happen to me in OTB, but similar rulings like this occur more often in the playing hall than most might expect xD

I’ve competed in an unrated otb blitz tournament and this happened to me so I’m confident I’m right.

funny you should say that because I have a rated blitz tournament exactly one week from today xD It isn't my first blitz event, but yeah still never happened to me...I probably check the clock a good amount so it doesn't happen grin.png

For FIDE:

III.3.1

If both flags have fallen and it is impossible to establish which flag fell first then:

III.3.1.1

the game shall continue if this occurs in any period of the game except the last period.

III.3.1.2

the game is drawn if this occurs in the period of a game in which all remaining moves must be completed.
