Men are better than women at creating their own statistics.

My top 5 are as follows:

1) Which is better, knight or bishop?

2) Who are the best/top/favorite players of all time?

3) What's your favorite piece?

4) Should you ever resign/I'm a Spartan!!!!!

5) Hey! My ratings (live/online/USCF/FIDE/Yahoo!) are too different!

And two more:

6) Kasparov vs Fischer

7) Rude behavior!!!

 8) Can women be as good as men?

really, who cares...  However, it has been my experience that girls simply aren't as interested in chess as boys are.  If not as many care, there will not be as many GMs

And who gives birth to those GM's?

And who impregnates those who give birth to those GM's?

Seriously, people? Cease this retardation at once!

Yes but the female gene determines pretty much everything.

Women are better than Irish people at chess.

1. # of Irish GMs < # of Female GMs.

I think this bears repeating.

What's really disturbing is that Women are also all better than Kasparov:

# of women GMs > # of GMs named Kasparov

South Africans aren't even capable of playing chess -- you can tell because they have no GMs.

Razzle-Dazzle

If Robert James Fischer said that women are bad at chess, then I'm behind that guy 100%. He played good chess, so surely he must be correct. He knew his stuff.

Razzle-Dazzle

Has Kasparov commented on this subject? That may be the deciding factor!

CPawn

I think whatever the intranets has to say about it is the truth...

Razzle-Dazzle

We must request guidance from the Intranets then.

I assume your mainly joking anyway, but this line of reasoning clearly doesn't work because women also give birth to big hulking lineman with names like Moose and Bubba.

Statistics is based on taking n number of instances, and drawing a conclusion from the data.

Be careful, because statistics may be slewed by a host of factors, which might render the conclusion unreliable.

# female GMs < # male GMs

very true. It is also true that

# female chess players < # male chess players.

The above data may not prove that women are generally inferior to men in chess. There are many personality differences (due to different hormones, etc.) between men and women, which make women generally less interested in chess to begin with.

[There are several factors (which I consider indiscrete to discuss over a public forum) which give only some men mental faculty to play chess (maybe better than most women), but it is my belief that majority of women - if they can be made interested in chess at all - has greater power of intuition and brain power than the majority of men where chess is concerned - it is only the lack of interest which pulls them back. However, this is only my gut feeling based on personal experience - I cannot prove it].

TheOldReb

A much smaller percentage of women who play chess reach a 2500 FIDE rating or better than the percentage of men who do. I dont know what kind of proof is needed to be able to say that men are better than women at anything ? It seems to me that no matter how much proof there is to support such a statement there are always the PC birds that will call you sexist for even bringing such facts to light. Is it safe to say that men are stronger than women even ?! Its sad that PC has done such a number on people today that some actually believe men and women are equla in everything and neither is superior to the other in anything ! Am I off base here ? Some of you PC birds speak up please and tell me exactly what do you believe ? Are we all equal in everything ?!

Razzle-Dazzle

I agree with the wise (NM)Reb.

TheGrobe

Clearly there are differences, but using junk statistics to try to extrapolate what those differences are is the problem I have.  It may well be true that men are better than women at chess, but it may also be true that women are better than men or that there is in fact no difference in this regard.  I haven't seen anything that conclusively tells me which of these three scenarios is correct, which is why I take a skeptical stance when I see a post by someone who claims that they have.  It's not an issue of Political Correctness for me, it's one of unfounded claims.

dsarkar

Reb, we have equal rights - men/women are NOT created equal - some have stronger physical/mental power than others.

Nightshadow

Ok, I'll try  to  explain this. From what documentaries and studies and whatnot I've seen, males are better at spatial thinking than females and the opposite is true for attention to detail. So, as chess requires more spatial thinking and visualisation, males tend to do better than females.

That's ofcourse the gist of it, don't ask me for too many details, I am male after all.Laughing

bigpoison

As you all have probably guessed, I am a PC Bird, so here I will pick up the gauntlet that Rex has thrown at my feet.  On average, men are vastly superior to women when it comes to upper body strength, everything else--excepting reproductive traits--generally comes down to each individual.

Oh yeah! women are much crazier, meaner, and prettier!

ThePaladin

Have there been any tournaments of top female players versus top male players?  That would be an interesting way of gathering evidence.
