Is not a question, just a statement ........ and I know I am going to get a lot of slack for this.....but its true :-)

The word is "flak"--but not from me. Your statement, while not universally true, is an accurate generalization, and anyone who wants to cry fowl and give you flak about "stereotypes" simply needs to recognize that they are simply a kind of generalization, and that as long as a generalization is not universally applied, it is perfectly acceptable, and even quite useful.

With all of that said, it is well known that no woman has ever been a top contender in the public eye (the "public" public, not individual chess audiences), and the strongest players in the world have always been men. If anyone wishes to bring up any particular female players, by all means feel free. But naming one or two or three only serves to prove my point--if you have to specify a few unique individuals, it only further demonstrates their uniqueness--and any woman who is a strong contender at the elite level is indeed unique.

Serve these flavorful scallops as a main dish or make them an appetizer with a tasty sauce or dressing.

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds large sea scallops, about 18 to 20
  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Dash freshly ground pepper
  • .
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons unsalted butter

Preparation:

In a food storage bag, toss scallops gently with the Cajun seasoning, 2 teaspoons olive oil, salt, and pepper. Refrigerate for about 1 hour.

Heat the 1 tablespoon olive oil and 2 teaspoons of butter in a large skillet over high heat. With tongs, arrange the scallops in the hot fat and cook for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until nicely browned.

Serve as a first course salad with Mimosa Dressing or serve with rice and steamed veggies for a delicious meal.
Serves 4 as a main dish or about 6 as a first course.

The recipe is the most intelligent reading in this topic.

I'd like to make my own generalization.  Swedes and other Scandinavians are good with seafood.

No, men are not better at chess than women, it's just that more men play.

Say you have 2 populations, X and Y. Population X is huge compared to population Y. The chance that the first ten or even twenty in a sample are of population X is very large.

So the Chinese should have the best chess players in the world? At least of the top 100 say the majority of them should be Chinese ?  Are they ? Wink

Alphastar18

That has nothing to do with what I said.

Picture it like this - you can have the worst 20 chess players in the world, or the best 20 players, or 20 players somewhere in between that are all of the same level, and the chance is pretty big that they all hail from population X, simply because X is so much more frequent than Y.

Way to go misrepresenting my point.

You still haven't provided anything towards the fact that top men > top woman.

Yes, that's true, but if as many women as men played chess, they'd be about equal. As others have said, it's simple probability that since so many more men play than women, it is more likely that more great chess players would be found in chess-playing men than chess-playing women. If an equal number of men and women played chess, each gender would be roughly the same strength. Capishe?

No, we're talking about general probability - it's not engraved in stone, never varying.
