Brain Tumours/Injuries and chess

I am a brain tumour survivor, currently on my second brain tumour and hoping for a good long term result. I have been an active chess player at club level for a long time. With this second tumour I am finding it affecting my ability to concentrate on over the board and online chess. I would be interested to hear from anyone in a similar predicament with health impairing their chess performance.

I had an opponent who nearly had a seizure while we were playing. He usually wears sunglasses while playing because the flicker of fluorescent lights can cause severe migraines or a seizure. He’s a great guy and we’ve played many games over the past 24 years.

I am not sure about the tumour itself. But very certain does cancer therapy affect your Concertration. Chess seems a very good tool helping to improve after... but its a very hard way. Best wishes to you.

In the last few months i have been diagnosed with neuro-psychological issues that have become more obvious over time. Basically I have processing and thinking deficiencies that affect my day to day life, including chess. I no longer play serious over the board competitive chess in a club.

I got a concussion and had it for 3-4 months so no chess or electronics for that time.... really sucked. missed a whole lot of tournaments too. When i finally got back i felt like i had forgotten everything about chess XD..... Better now tho

Oh and i couldn't read or concentrate and bright lights were like blinding

can your tumor be treated?

KdyNative

At present no. This is my second appearance of my tumour after 17 years since my first operation. My consultant is preferring to watch and wait while it is still small. There is the possibility of a future operation.

well i wish only the best for your future. stay well. happy.png

Sorry to hear this. I have cancer which has spread to my brain. I found this post as I was trying to see if my games were affected by my illness, and if others found the same. I’ve made some odd errors in judgment in games recently that have just got me wondering. I’m a relative beginner so it’s tough to say. Would be comforting to hear positive stories regarding chess and cancer. 💪🏾♟

I had a brain meningioma removed two months ago. I restarted playing chess two weeks ago. I can say I didn't forget what I knew before but I need a lot of practice to pay attention in blitz games. I make stupid mistakes in winning positions. I assume this is related to lack of concentration. Maybe I need more time to completely recover and start playing afterwards.

I hope all of you who deal with brain issues are alright!
