Uh - I think color doesn't matter - it's just a label. That wouldn't shake up opening theory a bit, just make it harder to follow.
Bring back 1800's style chess

You mean when people had poor defensive technique that allowed dubious openings such as the king's gambit to flourish?
@Timothy_P: actutually the dynamics of the game would change and it increases the complexity, since the queen's origin is on the opposing side, right for black. would make it more difficult to just memorize an opening set of moves since you would have to compensate for offset tempo if black started first.
@TheGreat...: no, with modern openings but it would cause a serious knowledge increase to open correctly in the proper set of opposing sequences, especially if people would punish a poor move and capitialize on it instead of the give and take methods they seem to employ these days...

The KG is not dubious and I would challange you to a game if you honestly believe an opening that can be used by modern GM's is dubious.
Just for example, Anand was not known for his strong openings as white, almost random some times, which leads into more psychological chess in my opinion, but chess is a game of pure logic which if played correctly kills psychological play every time. Otherwise a psychological player should be able to kill a computer...
Lately I have read quite a few posts about how upper level chess is anticlimatic. So what about bringing back the old style of chess?
1. First choice is color
2. Second choice is who goes first
This would greatly expand the openings since you would have to be a master of opening with either black or white.
I think it would lead to more dynamic games. What do you think?
