I think bullet chess just makes you act on impulse and not really analyze the game.

"Blitz chess kills your ideas." - Bobby Fischer

"To be honest, I consider [bullet chess] a bit moronoic, and therefore I never play it." -  Vladimir Kramnik

"[Blitz chess] rots the brain as surely as alcohol" - Nigel Short

"Blitz is simly a waste of time" - Vladimir Malakhov

If you want to improve your game, avoid bullet. It will not improve your calculation because you only have few seconds to calculate. Bullet will also teach you many bad habits.

Why Play Bullet?

Most of the time that I'm playing bullet chess, I'm unhappy.* I lose completely winning positions because my opponent shuffles pieces almost randomly with enough speed that I cannot execute the win before my clock expires. Other times, I revel in the absurdity that giving away one's queen with five seconds left on the clock is a more effective route to victory than making good moves. I've been on both sides of that farce. The key seems to be making unpredictable moves.

Playing bullet against a lagging opponent is even worse. The rhythm of the game feels like the opponent is using more time, but the reverse is true. That's when I become bellicose. My dogs usually head outside when I curse at the computer screen.

Despite the misery, I play thousands of bullet games every year. Usually, I go on a two or three week binge where I play hundreds of games per day. Then many months transpire between bullet games.

What draws me to this misery?

I agree with jambyvedar, playing bullet doesn't allow you to think about your moves because you're rushing for time and you don't won't to lose by being slow. Playing slower games allows you to learn and play better.

bullet is for fun and train your hand/mouse speed. You have to pretty much move before the other person moves many times. A good mouse and internet connection will boost your rating 100 points.

NEVER play bullet if your system is low on memory or your speed connection not good enough. I use a tablet pc , it's very difficult for me to play bullet chess. My normal rating is about 1650-1700 and my bullet rating below 1300!
