Calling out pfren

What is your opinion on the endgame? I find it so boring, but so essential.

I love Nunn's Secrets of Rook Endings and Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual 3e, but when it comes to actually applying it OTB I get so bored. I am a lot stronger now, so all of my games progress to the end. And here I find I am still weak, because I do not know how to play here!

What are your feelings and thoughts on the endgame?

Not sure why you post it on general forums, instead of asking pfren directly. wink.png

Nobody calls out pfren and lives.

They once tried to name a street after him but nobody crosses pfren.

High-rated players can also be trolls. This is a learning wobble. But I like Pfren.

if you don't like the endgame then why not learn how to play the scholars mate ? besides who knows if you are pfren's type ?

Endgames are boring.  Anyone who can count to 10 can learn most endgames.  This is why I try to end the game long before it reaches the stage where I want to sleep.

A good strategy against young guys and noobs: go straight for the endgame. They seem to have memorized the first 30 moves of an opening but can't figure out opposition or how to block a pawn or which pawn to advance first against a pawn minority...etc.

You tend to fall asleep whilst playing? That isn't good!

Against the young, just play a trappy, antique opening that hasn't been brought back yet or was only brought back briefly over seven years ago. Don't head for an ending because often, the young can count!

You might not know this but pfren can post and play on cc from a pay phone.

Wouldn't you be in the endgame for a long time then?

That actually sounds like a good tip, but endgames are all about position memorization, not just counting.

E.g. If you reach Reti's position (with the two pawns) then you can count all you want, but if you don't know the position (just bring your king to the center), you haven't a chance.

P.S. Crystallized intelligence improves over time.

On the rare occasion that I'm lucky enough to play a complex ending brilliantly and error-free, it's because I'm counting and calculating! I don't memorise anything.

E.g. If you reach Reti's position (with the two pawns) then you can count all you want, but if you don't know the position (just bring your king to the center), you haven't a chance.

Bringing the king to the centre is a basic rule. If you don't know what to do, bring your king to the centre. Last year I lost a game I should have won by doing just that. I made one move towards the centre and it lost. It allowed the opponent to zugzwang me and invade my flank pawns. I should have analysed more carefully.
