Becoming a GM is like being in the pro league in basketball. There are millions of people who love basketball but only a few could make it in the professional league. Just as there are millions of people who love Chess only a few could make it GM. Being a GM allows you to enter Open Tournaments in other federations and countries. Ofcourse just like in basketball, people like Mugsy Bogues, Wilkes, JJ Barea who are short in stature yet have made it in the big leagues like the NBA, almost everyone has a chance to make it to the big league but not anyone can become GM.
Can Anyone Become Grandmaster?

Then please enlighten me. What am I, if not a troll, which I've always considered myself to be?
Ever seen a troll's kitchen's sink? There's a pig there waiting for left overs, enlightened now?
Why would a troll keep a pig in a kitchen sink? Haven't they heard of pigpens?

But why? I like pens! After all they're mightier than the sword, am I right?
You need a life, badly.
Well... obviously I already have one, or how else am I able to post in these forums? Though it would definitely be great if I could get another one after I'm done using this one.
But anyway.... why did u change the topic? I thought we were talking about pens, and you said I don't belong in a pen. You still haven't answered my question: why don't I belong in a pen?

You are criminally insane with no life obviously. -_-.
And yet again, you try to change the subject. Could you please answer my question: why don't you think I belong in a pen? I like them!

In real success there is often a big part of luck and coincidence at play. You see the successful one while the 100 that failed go unnoticed. And quite some are just abnormal maniacs in their focus. You have to be obsessed with chess to become fischer or carlsen. I would not want to be like that.
Yup. Gettin' out of bed in the morning is the first step. That accomplished, the rest is just showin' up and a bit o' luck.

To mention the truth--this thread while very long is not with much meaning.
Why? because it should be very obvious that not anybody can become a grandmaster. It just takes the slightest bit of critcal thinking to know this.

What if being a GM is all about motivation? It's a matter of staying at it till you get to the necessary level. Passion is everything. If you lose your passion, you lose the goal.

There are 8 million registered players in FIDE's database.
Now, that excludes millions of players who are registered in national federations but not with FIDE. Well over 2/3rds of the US chess players are not on that list for example.
Best estimates are that world wide there are around 20 million or so competative chess players.
GM's are .007% of the competative chess players in the world.
That means for every GM there are around 13,000 competative chess players who aren't GMs.
Anyone who thinks it's just dedication and hard work is delusional and oblivious to the facts involved.
You're right. Delusional as hell.

Well we can't assume that everyone that is FIDE rated is even attempting to be a grandmaster.
At any rate there are other issues like exposure. Most people don't reach that level w/o having access to other GMs, coaches and venues to constantly play against top competition. There's probably not a kid master alive that didn't either have master level parents or live in a high-level chess area.
Even if it were theoretically true that hard work could pay off you'd still be trying to reinvent the wheel in many aspects of the game while others had these aspects taught to them in a structured manner by professionals.

Capablanca, 3 August 1922, London quote, "As to myself, if business men gave as little time to their business as I generally give to chess, they would all go bankrupt in a very short time. It is thus evident that one can become one of the leading players of the world and yet have considerable time left for any other pursuit in life. Of course, if a man wants to become a leading chess player and has not the great natural ability required for such a thing, he will need more time than a day has hours, but he will never get there. Chess may be a science, but from what we know at present it is just as much an art."
page 141, Capablanca, Edward Winter

even thinking would suffice: you don't even have to add the 'critical' part. I actually thought this thread was a joke, and so I posted a few jokes on it. I like good-natured jokes

Well i guess michael Jackson was delusional, i guess jordan was delusional, i guess bobby was delusional, i guess oprah was delusional, i guess obama was delusional, i guess bill gates was delusional, steve jobs was delusional, garry kasparov was delusional, hell anybody who beats the odds are delusional as hell and everybody who looks at the numbers saying things are impossible because of numbers are rational... what a world we live in...
my dog is on his way his gm title. i will let you all know how it goes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_Galanti He is a poser and a troll, Omar Galanti is probably not even half as insane.
Behold, a common phenomenon on the chess.com forums: one troll calling another troll a troll.
And, since I made this post, it's actually one troll calling another troll who is calling another troll a troll a troll. And yes, that sentence makes sense.
Ok... I'll explain what I just said (partly because I have nothing better to do). I'll explain it using color coding:
Red: Macer75
Blue: Khzx
Yellow: Omargalanti
