Not the point. Look at his rating, could he play a GM to a draw? It would be silly to think so.

Just checked your profile, looks like you know a few things about chess.

Ok, all these people who claim that anyone can become a Grandmaster, prove it.

Become a grandmaster. Start by stating your current rating. Then declare how you will do it and how long it will take you. Make the claim public at chessbase.com, and ask for sponsors.

Then go and do it.

I'd like to see them give their current rating and say they'll win a local tourney or open... you can do that well before GM status... lets see how long it takes them.

More babble. I mereley said that the probability of you being exceptional at chess is very low, which is an indisputable fact. Comparing chess ability to winning the lottery is, quite frankly, a slight to logic itself. You're either severely delusional or a troll of the highest order.

i think the rule is whoever says troll first is the troll.

besides it isnt even an undisputable fact.

Right, without sounding arrogant I don't believe you have the intelligence to continue this conversation.

dont worry you just sound like someone who  lacks any manners and resorts to insults when he is wrong.

This is very strange. It's pretty clear that not anyone can be an NBA player or that not anyone can reach an olympic final. But when it comes to chess, many people apparently think that things are different, for whatever reason.

Couldn't agree more

This is a false analogy.  There are thousands more GM's than there are NBA (450-500 a year), NFL (about 2000 a year) or MLB (750-900 a year) players.

A better comparison is to scratch golfers (0 handicap).

Actually, it's a very apt analogy.  There are not "thousands more GM's"...and a GM is roughly equivalent to the major leagues of chess.

And a scratch golfer is more on the level of a NM.  GM=pro golfer.

This also reminds me of something I once read on the subject of writing.  Nobody expects that they'll be able to sit down at a piano and play like Vladimir Horowitz...but an abundance of people seem to feel that they have a Great Novel lurking within them somewhere. Wink

Yeah, a scratch golfer wouldn't get anywhere near professional golf (competition rather than coaching).

well, loads of anyones became a GM before. i mean, lets put it this way ... posting poop on forums won't get anyone to GM status. ask Magnum (if you could get his phone number), he'll tell you the same thing i did and he doesn't hang around here writing stuff like "1.b4 is puke" or "stalemate has to go" or .... "excuse me but i totally disagree with you".

i guess you have a very good point

I think if you are exposed at a young age and are guided by a great coach and are disciplined enough to practice everyday then sure you can become a GM.  Bottom line: hard work and anyone can become a GM.

Avatar of Sunofthemorninglight

exactly!

i think we have reached critical mass on the discussion.

"anyone can become a GM, just not everyone".
