Can I become a Grandmaster?

Is it enough to just believe in yourself, or is it an age thing. I'm 41, and I've never studied the game, but I feel like I could obsess about chess like Fischer if I really decided to. Is obsession enough? If not obsession, then is it just age? Have I missed my chance?

Alas, obsession is not enough.  It's an age thing.  Kids who get serious about chess at age 16 are told they will have to work extra hard and even then basically be lucky to reach GM because they are years behind their peers.  You have virtually no chance.  Doesn't mean you can't still become a fine chess player, perhaps even a titled one, but GM isn't going to happen.  But go ahead and prove me wrong...

Frankfurterstein, I tried contacting you but you're not accepting messages or friendships. What do I do now? Wait??

I just want to let you know that Frankfurstein is definitely trolling.

@MiahstroHorror A younger age would definitely help. I mean, nothing is impossible, but given your age and rating, I would say most likely you are too late to become a Grandmaster. You don't have to become a GM however, to enjoy this wonderful game, and the complexities of it. If you really want to become a master, I would believe it is not too late to become either a Candidate Master, National Master, or FIDE Master. Prepare to invest countless hours however, drop the big bucks on good coaches that will make you climb faster, and to experience walls occasionally. Your original goal of GM is simply too far out I believe right now to feasibly grasp what workload it takes to become a GM. I would consider climbing first to Class A, if you can get there first. Good luck.

The big question is WHY do you want to become a grandmaster? Does one actually use the title in front of one's name in common use? Good for impressing women I suppose if one did. Search deeply on line, in this dumbed-down World perhaps you can buy the title.

i googled a little bit and apparently the GM who learned chess at the oldest age is this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ye_Jiangchuan , he learned chess at age 17, became the Chinese chess champion at 20 and a GM at 33, apparently he's a 2600s GM today who peaked at 2684 (16 points shy of the unofficial Super GM status!), so i won't say that it is impossible, but if you really work on your chess everyday, have good learning resources and etc you i don't believe that you can't play at 2100+ one day, (as strong as an expert in the USA or a FIDE WFM)
