Can new chess openings be created?

Sort:

I recently found on YouTube that Chess Master Anna Crumbling has created a new chess opening and she called it the 'Cow opening'(This opening is shown above). I took it as a joke but I am thinking that is it possible that some grandmaster may create a new theory and create a new opening I mean all the openings or gambit we have are created by somebody so If someone do it nowadays, so will their opening be recognised as book moves

I mean maybe..? Most if not all decent openings have discovered and named.

I am a fan of Anna Cramling’s videos, and have played the Cow Opening against bots and people. I win most of my games with it. It’s just a fun new opening to experiment with. Not sure it will hold up under grandmaster scrutiny. Her GM dad promised to try it in a tournament, her GM mom (talk about a chess pedigree, 2 GM parents!) was skeptical of the opening. More info on her YouTube channel.

most likely, yes, new ones could be created.

Certainly! In the dynamic world of chess, new openings can be and are created. As players continue to analyze and experiment, they discover fresh move orders, novel pawn structures, and innovative piece placements that challenge traditional opening theory. These new ideas and variations bring excitement and strategic diversity to the game. When these innovative approaches gain recognition and are consistently played by strong players, they can eventually be established as distinct openings or variations, contributing to the ever-evolving landscape of chess strategy.

Anna may have “invented” The Cow, but what she really did was reinvent an opening that was published over 20 years ago. It is called The Defense Game, and here is a link to the book:

I feel bad for Anna, this must be embarrassing for her. But you can’t invent something 21 after it’s already been done. Let’s give credit where credit is due; let’s honour the first inventor & call this by its original name: The Defense Game.

Every solid opening was allready discovered, but the theory is expanding and you can allways create a variation of an existing opening.

the cow opening is very bad bcs it has a lot of weakness.

Yes I agree if you are a beginner from 0-800 yoa can play this opening but after that it is prbly never gonna work,it has lots of weaknesses and you are basically 2-3 moves behind your opponent.

Even if the opening had been invented already Anna would have nothing to be ashamed of. She still created it on her own presumably. If I came up with big bang theory on my own and found out someone else did too that would make me the person who came up with it second, not too bad of a title either.

Well, now chess.com recognises The Cow opening. When you perform the moves the label is shown. Love it

They will recognize the Drunk Monkey opening if performed by their partner/streaming ppl if you get the point. Chess.com don't invent the rules. Nor is a factor for recognition of some sort.

You are what's called a Chess Snob. The ugly part of the the chess community. Chess is becoming more popular and when new players come and see people like you, It's not a good look.

Is this opening good?

Don’t worry

With best Stockfish moves Cow is -1,2, which means black has huge advantage.

Could this be a variation of the Tartakower Attack?

borovicka75

This is London with strange g3.

Combinatorics123

It's a kind of London that use the Tartakower attack as a foundation/beginning for the development of the first pieces.

I think that It would have been more correct to ask if It could be a potential new variation of the London system, mea culpa.
