Can we get our points back from cheaters?

When a cheater is caught, is it possible to return rating points to those who lost to him?

How difficult is it to return with a different name?

No. Let's say you lost to him 20 games ago, and the rating points are adjusted for that game. Think about all the games you and your opponents and your opponents' opponents and your opponents' opponents' opponents and your opponents' opponents' opponents' opponents and your ...  (continue until 20x "opponents' ") have played since then which would also have to be adjusted. The ramifications are mind boggling.

I resigned against one today. Points are flushed down the bog, never to return.

How could you tell your opponent was cheating ?

Very easily.

What about the downstream impact of the points that should have been assigned to opponents you subsequently lost to but weren't because the cheater had lowered your rating, or points that should have been deducted from opponents you beat, but weren't becasue your rating was lower than it should have been.  This affects all of us man!

Or we could just let the rating pool do what it does best and adjust back to where it should be after a couple of games.

Do you think it is possible to fool yourself into thinking that your opponent is using an engine when in fact they are just playing very well ?.
