i mean caruana is 5-0 already at the strongest chess tournament of all time

No. If he scores 5-0 in the next 5 rounds, then yes.

Not with certanty. He might be. But judging by such a small sample is very unwise. Karpov had his best tourney while Kasparov was still holding the championship with an iron fist.

Sure, you can speculate, or even believe it, but it may not be true.

no. if he finishes the tournament undefeated you can make a compelling argument he is the biggest challenger to #1; however it would also be the greatest chess achievement in history by any player probably, and he would deserve all the buzz he was entitled to as the front page of the chess world in front of magnus until the next tournament. Even then I wouldn't automatically put him at #1. There's still a ways to go.

Magnus won gold at Blitz & rapid for one, and he's been top 2 in every major individual tournament in the last year, and is current world champion. Caruana is making a strong case.. perhaps a definite one that right now he is the biggest challenger to Carlsen perhaps with respect to Anand of course. Carlsen has been the most consistent player in all of chess and that's why he has the highest rating

Aronian was clearly that person before, but now it appears to be at the very least Aronian, Caruana, and Karajkin, but I still tip my hat to Aronian as the best contender for now, while peaking at Karjakin and now being bedazzled by Caruana, and still of course Anand is the #1 contender.. why? he beat all of those guys in points and earned his spot at the table. Just because he's "older" doesn't mean the chess world should hope he washes up thinking he doesn't have many years on top left. Maybe he will suprise you and give it another 5 years.

Caruana however has had 2 wins against Magnus in their last 3 games.. and magnus had 1 win.. but again .. that's way too soon.

Magnus was having problems against Aronian last year

Head to head score is 5-4 for Carlsen. We'll see if Carlsen gets revenge in round 8 like he did at Shamkir. Obviously Caruana will win the tourny because it would take a complete collapse to lose it and he's in perfect form.

this tournament is one big dream for caruana and his score speaks for itself, i hope he'll maintain this level of play and faces carlsen within a few years, i think he's the most serious contestant of the current generation

Carlsen wins tournament after tournament and is World Champion (and still the highest rated player ever). Caruana leads at halfway in the next and now Caruana is better.

How fickle.

Avatar of AngeloPardi

Being the strongest chess player is not about winning five games. Carlsen has won more tournament in the last two years than Caruana since he is top 50.

Ok, they really need to teach kids statistics in schools. That would pretty much settle every single one of these kinds of threads.

If nothing else, Sinquefield is proving what a sham the Candidates tournament was.  I hope Carlsen doesn't sign the agreement and instead plays a match against Caruana.  Anand is a joke of a challenger.

I'm happy for Fabiano though. Hopefully in the next few years we will see Carlsen and Caruana at full strength play in a match.

nice informed jab at public education but the truth is that smart people teach themselves statistics and many will never truly grasp the concepts.

No caruana is not better than carlsen. besides the previous well stated points you must remember that Fabiano has been using his best stuff(as he well should) while it just seems to me like carlsen is saving some prep for WC

Caruana had plenty of opportunity to qualify before the last cycle. He didn't get there on merit. The next one he will.

You can't use a tournament after the challenger has been selected as evidence he should have been there. He didn't go 5-0 to start a tournament until after Anand was picked.

another kind of superficial point of interest about the cup was that in general I think of carlsen as a d4 player and Caruana as an e4 player.

there was quite a bit of e4 starts at the tourny and I really think Caruana understands the open games maybe even better than anyone else.

Anand won the candidates fair and square and to suggest he should not be given his chance to wrest back the title goes against the idea of natural justice.

Caruana is a brilliant player who for some reason did not have the results to contest the candidates..but in a couple of years when the next world title cycle comes round Caruana will be a very live contender.

Why? Carlsen has played e4 more than d4 in his career. I think he mixes it up more these days though.

I almost always seen him playing the queens gambit but admittedly I have not gone through many of his games

Magnus really does seem to play about everything -- I see 1 e4, 1 d4, and moves like 1 Nf3 or 1 c4 quite regularly. I haven't looked up his games, but from what I see I don't think he favors any of these approaches clearly the most.

He often plays an early d3 in the ruy lopez -- it tends to lead to a slow positional game which works well for him.

Unfortunately superking failed statistics 3 times and eventually dropped out of school completely Frown

Anand got his spot at the Candidates simply by being the loser of the WC match last year.  The selection for the Candidates didn't really take in all the top players and therefore was certainly suspect, the way the selection process is arrived at should definitely be looked at.  Hopefully the next Candidates will have a more representative selection of players from the top 10.  I have no idea why they allow players to take out their worst result from the Grand Prix series either.
