Magnus is the champion of Tic-Tac-Toe. I don't know if he can play chess at all.

CrimsonKnight7

Of all time ? No way anyone could answer such a question, because the time for mankind has not expired yet.

Probably with the current World championship format, however with my format he may not las that long on  top unless he constantly works on his game. Here is the link if you are interested:  http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/a-system-better-than-the-current-world-championship-system

Where´s his "Immortal" then? They all have them, Anderssen, Steinitz,  Morphy, Lasker, Petrov, Spassky, Karpov, Tal, Capablanca, Fischer, Kasparov ... what´s with Magnus? Sure, he´s only 22, but I´m not even convinced that his style lends itself to the production of an "Immortal", even though he may have a long run at the top. I think it´s a combination of tournament record plus flashes of brilliant insight which define "greatest of all time", and Carlsen has still a way to go before he draws even in both respects with, say, Kasparov.

Interesting point....what game played by Carlsen would be closest to being considered an Immortal?

McHeath

I googled it and found this entertaining site - completely unfair of course, he was about 10 years old in most of the games ...

Bf1 must be a touch move error? Incredible.

if your region supports freedom of speech, you can say pretty much anything.  so, a qualified yes.

And even if your region doesn't support freedom of speech, I can't think of anywhere in the world where saying "right now Magnus Carlsen is the greatest of all time" would be illegal.

I dont know... saying that in india and you could get mobbed...

MisterBoneman

The problem is simply the phrase "greatest of all time," which would presume that we will all get dumber, start sitting around drooling on ourselves. Maybe a little more than some of us already do, eh?

I'd say he's the greatest up to now.

But in spite of fandom, I'll almost bet you ("almost" because I don't think it's allowed here) he probably doesn't like the fandom so much when he's working his brain to a frazzle against the likes of Kasparov, Annand, Girzchuk, and Polgar (that HAD to be embarrassing, eh?) ("I'll bet you 50¢ he loses the first Pawn!")

("YOU'RE ON!")

No...cut it out before people think you're schizophrenic. (but I'm not) Yes you are. You're talking to yourself right now! (no I'm not)

It's much worse than that, anyway. (how could it be any worse?)

Hey guys. Whatcha doing?

 Yup...MUCH worse.

I brought some candy...On sale Halloween candy. Cheap. Stale.

we can all say it, but that doesnt mean it is true. Brah interesting book on perception vs reality that i have a feeling you may like to endulge in.

The word:"GREATEST" is a tricky word. If we wish to be acknowledged as "Artists" and I believe all Chess players in their hearts [ certainly the better ones for the most part], then perhaps a re-appraisel of that concept and word is to be considered.

But first of all I think its a tad early to attempt to measure MAGNUS in such a grandiose manner, as great as he is. And while I applaud the enthusiasm implied in just such a statement regarding CARLSON, one of the most definitive criteria relative to greatness is consistency over a long period of time, to say nothing of that consistency against great players over that time frame. Has MAGNUS done that yet?! I think not.

In fact though MAGNUS has been a round for a while, he is yet to be a World champion, and EVEN IF HE DOES ACHIEVE THAT, he's got to defend that Title succesfully AT LEAST ONCE before such lofty praise is EVEN CONSIDERED, much less offered up! At least that is MY opinion. BOTVINNIK was a dominant player through THREE decades, as has been both KARPOV and KASAPROV as was SPASSKY!...

Lets see what Magnus does with ANAND, who last time I checked still has a "plus" score against MAGNUS, as does ARONIAN....It may very well be CARLSON'S time but I have a strong feeling that it may be delayed a little.

Santero13

I like what SAVAGE" says above though I am not as quick to label the current crop "mediocre"....But are the current crop in the same league as KASPAROV, KARPOV, or the era that spans [FISCHER, SPASSKY, PETROSIAN],  not to mention {BOTVINNIK, TAL, SMYSLOV, BRONSTEIN, AND KERES?!]

Perhaps, ratings obviously dont say everything. I would like, by the way, to introduce myself.  I am new here but not new to chess, having been away from chess for years while making a living playing music.

its good to be back, CHEERS everyone and enjoy the Championship between MAGNUS and VISHY!!

MrDamonSmith

Superking500, I thought you were of the opinion that Emery Tate was the best ever and that Magnus Carlsen was just lucky. Hey everybody, go look at his other threads. He's just completely flipped his previous opinion. Now that he thinks Carlsens gonna win he acts now like Carlsons the greatest, completely ignoring his belief that Magnus only became #1 because of luck not skill.

CharlieMcCarthy

We can completely disregard his rating when comparing to past generations->Ratings inflation

Somebodysson

no such creature as ''of all time''. Perhaps greatest of this time...time will tell. But no way to determine 'of all time'. Times change, competition changes conditions change. Game changes.

Talfan1

no carlsen has a long way to go yet to be considered the greatest but he is still young
