Can women be as good at chess?

I would say they can. They might play differently than men on the average (more defensively, taking less risks)

What is that?! Where does that even come from but your imagination? If I don't see a mistake then I won't take risks, if I see a mistake then I'll play aggressively. It all has to do with the position on the board, not my vagina. Crazy peopleLaughing

Testosterone is linked to inhibition or something... where males drive fast and crash more cars... I'm too tired and have not good memory to say anything accurate here haha. But yeah, males supposedly take more risks.

I wonder if it's one of those things though... where it's 2% more likely with a +-5% margin of error haha. E.g. too small to matter, and may be incorrect anyway,

It is proven by many different disciplines (psycolocy, anthropology etc) that distinctions between men and women according to mental abilities are culturally orientated and not scientifically originated. The most usual (wrong) argument is that men are better in maths than women. The same goes for chess. There are various parameters not taken into account by those who state that women are not as good as men at chess. For instance what is the ratio of men and women playing chess in the overall population? I suspect that more men play chess than women, so there are more chances to have male talents than female. Plus, scrolling down the posts i saw an argument according to which women tend to play less aggressively. In my opinion it is a very nice example of how self-fulfilling prophecies work: the way a person plays reveals his/her personnality, which is a social constraction based upon natural characteristics. Centuries of civilization created a canonical image for women which is anything but aggressive. So when we note a behaviour according to this pattern we simply confirm the preordained image we have created for women and they have accepted it. It is not a matter of sex, but of (socially constructed) gender.

Psychology and anthropology are sciences... maybe you meant biology? But male and female brains are different also so...

As far as stats, participation certainly affects the extremes (males have the highest and I also expect lowest ratings). But I did see a graph that showed the female average rating was lower than the male. This can't be explained by there being less women playing.

Stereotypically, female chess players have a very aggressive style, so whoever you saw say that was an idiot anyway lol.

All i m saying is that people who really study sex and gender find no biological differences between male and female brain. They have even found out that cultural bias influenced research many times: don t forget that racism was a "well founded scientific" theory before the Second World War. As a matter of fact believing to biologically based gender differences is rather racistic. All these people who post here arguing for a biological difference between male and female brain reproduce a pseudo-scientific hoax which verifies their own limited experiences. Plus, as far as i can understand, there is no-one here who actually has the slightest idea of how the personallity is constracted. The majority of the above posts shows that most of their authors don t even imagine that what we call intelligence is in a great sense result of socially constructed personallity.

Ok, there may be no good evidence that due to physiological reasons males and females preform differently on certain tests or display certain dissimilar behaviors. In these cases differences may be 100% due to culture.

But the brains are different, that's not up for debate. They're very similar of course, and their performance is pretty much the same, but physiologically they're not identical.

Anyway, like I said, the stereotype among chess players is that women do not play more defensively or take less risks. As much as you were fishing for confirmation bias in previous posts, you seem to be leaning that way yourself.

Everyone has a bias. A bias is directly related to your cultural background. The best you can do is to think out of the box a little and try to see beyond your own bias.

Not supposedly. It's a fact. Nothing is more linked to risk-taking than going to jail, and just check: most inmates throughout the world are men.

I'm tired, so correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems like one of those backwards arguments that pops up a lot.

This only shows incarceration is a good predictor for gender, not that gender is a good predictor for incarceration.

IIRC when I did the division 0.001% of females were incarcerated compared to 0.002% of males. I.e. gender was a very poor predictor.

Also "nothing is a better predictor for risk taking" Really?
Sky diving? Police/military job? Gambling? Lots of sex partners?

It might not be politically correct, but I'm interested in searching for the truth. If men think differently than women, I don't think this is something to be brushed aside and ignored. But we must openly ask ourselves first if this is true, and to what extent this is true. For example, would these differences mean women will never play as well as men do? I think recorded games between male and female chessmasters tells us that they can be as good as men, even if they play slightly differently.

An honest question can't be sexist.

But the OP may be a troll, and attract a lot of sexist comments / people, sure.

For example, over 95% of people in prison are religious.

But most religious people are not in prison... just like most men are not in prison.

have you ever went to visit jail and counted how many women there are in the prison?

Of course you should go to a women's prison to do a fair comparison.

Put it this way.  You rape someone the chances you'll get away is zero.  You kill someone the chances you get away is zero.  The moment you kill someone even if somehow you got away you'll have to run for the rest of your life.  At that point your life is over.  You travel and dig out of the trash to eat for the rest of your life BECAUSE IF YOU SETTLE PEOPLE WILL START ASKING ABOUT YOUR PAST AND VERIFYING BY CALLING AND LOOKING THINGS UP Thank you Jesus Christ!!!!!!!!!!!!

Simple, if they ask about your past just kill them also, that way you can eat their garbage for free!
