Can you be a dumb person and still be good at chess?

The more people speak bad of Fischer, the more I know he was right. Time to put down the western mask of hypocrisy.
Brilliant logic. lol.
Explain me why it isn't. Do you think it is good to follow the dumb masses, or that the fact that many people think one thing automaticaly means it's a good or right thing?
All I see is people going all in against Fischer because he was too different and liked to use his own brain for bad or for good. Would not bow down to anyone.
Come back when you have such a troubled youth and subsequent life - let's see your perfectly sane reaction to everything, your jaw-dropping social skills and all that stuff...
Talkin' out of our asses aren't we, Fischer haters?

The more people who speak bad of those who speak bad of Fischer, the more I know the Fischer-haters are right!
heh.
Think for yourself. Automatically disagreeing is just as bad.

Depends on what good means. But I'd say most of the >1700 players I know are good thinkers and skilled at other mental disciplines as well. I don't know many >1700 players whom I don't think of as clever or intelligent people.

"All I see is people going all in against Fischer because he was too different and liked to use his own brain"
Not exactly. From wikipedia: "Fischer said that it became clear to him in 1977, after reading The Secret World Government by Count Cherep-Spiridovich, that Jewish agencies were targeting him."
"He idolized Hitler and read everything about him that he could lay his hands on."
"Fischer's library contained anti-semitic and white supremacist literature such as Mein Kampf, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and The White Man's Bible and Nature's Eternal Religion by Ben Klassen, founder of the Church of the Creator."
It seems to me that he latched on to others' opinions. He just believed all the stupid things he read.

Was Fischer crazy? Yes. But was he dumb? No, he was brilliant. You can definitely be brilliant and crazy at the same time.

Because Fischer was known for keeping his views under wraps and making sure he didn't say controversial things..... oh wait.
If he believed "all the stupid things he read" then how come he didn't believe the US propaganda machine?
If he believed in Nazi literature then how come he never ever EVER said it. Fischer wasn't noted for refusing to say outrageous things.
One way or another, you can't spread lies like that without any proof or any idea why he had such a book. Lots of people read Mein Kampf out of curiosity. You better have more to back it up than there was a book in his possession.

What the hell does all this mean? Emil Cioran was known for being a nazi supporter in his youth, Dostojevsky used "jew" as an offence, Jorge Luis Borges was a quasi-friend of dictator Pinochet, Ortega y Gassett was ok with Francisco Franco, and so on and so on.
I understand people lack an open mind and an education but come on, life IS NOT banal and superficial - please spare me the kiddo logic.

Not really an intellectual exercise though. People who buy into hate and fear are psychologically troubled. When they can't deal with the fear and anxiety in their own lives they can choose something concrete and far away as the source.
Also things he said like all top level chess is fixed, and he was still the world champion. He couldn't deal with the idea that he wasn't the best player, so in his mind all top level chess ended after he won the WCC. Intellectually it's silly, psychologically it's sad.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say... Are you suggesting the Nazi regime and ideology was valid? I sincerely hope not.

Wikipedia... phahah... I spent all my life reading books, I don't need to go on wikipedia to check MY facts. Please...

I won't name any names, but I know quite a few chess masters who are not very bright away from the board.

I think this is not a question of whether Can a dumb person play chess. No, a dumb person can't play chess, it's more than hard for him to handle. However, it is a question that do you think you are dumb and that you can't play a high level task like chess. If you think you are capable and smart, go ahead and do it, you will be more than enough to handle the game of chess.

He used the word "pre-arranged" rather than fixed. He meant they were not coming up with the moves over the board, that instead they were using the theory. The Soviets also sometimes agreed to draws when it was beneficial to both parties, or more controversially when it was beneficial to Soviets over outsiders like Fischer. Fischer was well within his rights to complain about the latter.
To a person not understanding the high level chess context it looks like Fischer is saying it's all fixed, however to a person who understands how chess theory works it's clear what he meant.

Fischer said all the games of the 1984-1985 Karpov - Kasparov match were arranged. This is more than theory, he was saying they didn't play a single move of those games.
Of course it was ok to be upset about the prearranged draws and losses, especially in '62. IIRC some of those players even admitted to it years later.
No.
But that won't stop me from trying!!!
