Per Susan Polgar:

The most common questions of the week are about the general rules of chess etiquette and various tournament chess formats.

The following are generally accepted rules of etiquette that are observed by most chess players:

• It is considered rude and inappropriate for a player to eat or have a meal at the playing table.

• Basic refreshment such as water is OK.

• When you chew gum, chew quietly. Don't annoy your opponent by chewing loudly or blow bubbles.

• Smoking at the playing table is not allowed.

• Refrain from singing while playing. You may think you're Josh Groban, but do not perform while playing chess.

• There should be no communication with your opponent until after the game, except to resign, offer a draw, or announce J'adoube (means adjusting your pieces).

• Don't make a draw offer to your opponent after every move once it is refused or rejected.

• Don't listen to an MP3 player during the game.

Lol. Why would that ever be an issue. Eat before.....regardless because its rude to eat infront of people who arnt eating....like other people who would have brought snacks had they known the answer to the question you just asked.

I don't think it's rude and it's odd some people would think so.  An MP3 player isn't bad if the other person can't hear, though it would seem counterproductive.

If you are going to eat a snack, it should be done away from the table.  Go to the lobby area where a director can see you that you are not cheating, and eat it out there.

I had an opponent eating kettle-cooked potato chips, and just about everyone within 3 boards one way or the other was distracted.  The director was summoned and he was told he couldn't eat at the table.

Some areas now ban MP3 players.  I complain to the director every time my opponent uses an MP3 player if I can hear even a micro amount of anything.  I don't need to be able to identify that you are playing a Vanilla Ice or Britney Spears toon in order for it to be distracting.

Also, if I say "adjust" (which is just as valid as however you spell that French BS), and you don't hear me, tough!  You have no recourse.  You go and complain to the director, first thing I tell him is that if he didn't have his MP3 player going, he'd have heard me say it.  You have to be able to prove for a penalty to be invoked, and with headphones on, you won't be able to prove anything.  Not like others are going to back you up as they probably heard me say "adjust".

Also, crinkling of things like wrappers are just as distracting, so it doesn't require kettle cooked chips or melba toast to be loud.

Just learn to grow up and eat before or after the game, not during!  If you can't do that, take up tic tac toe instead.  It's a shorter game!

All I've eaten at the table is apples. And it was only after 3.5 hours of play and I was hungry and exhausted. Other people were doing it to so it was fine.

Don't be that guy who eats almonds at the board, that was so annoying to everyone in the entire row of boards.

If you're going to eat at the board, you should be careful not to swallow your Knight and play hot-dog to e5.

Okie, for those just joining, here is a list of things to annoy your opponent at the chess table:

Eat a full meal. Mainly of potato chips and ice.

Chew gum. Minimum 8 pieces so you have to open your mouth when you chew.

Sing. A video has been attached at the bottom of a popular chesstime song.

Whisper across the board at your opponent when nobody is within earshot. Use random words like tinfoil, babalou, houdini, etc....

Quiet snacks are fine...I had a guy eat an entire chinese dinner at the baord once.  It smelled really good too.  It didnt bother me, but drove one of the guys next to us nuts.

Can someone answer the question though?  I'm curious to know the answer.  So far it has been established that eating at the table can be considered rude, and eating at the table can be distracting.  We also see that it is considered bad etiquette according to Susan Polgar.  But none of these responses answer the question.

In the official rules, is eating something allowed?  Not would you eat at the board, not do you consider it rude, not does it bother you or not.  Is it permitted under the current rules?

There's no specific rule about pogo-sticking during a game either. However, there is a rule about distracting your opponent. Distracting your opponent in any manner is not allowed.  This covers many types of behavior.

Reasonable people think about whether or not their actions may bother their opponent in any way and use such thoughts to guide them in their behavior at the board.

MoxieMan

It's not specifically agains the rules, but there are rules in place that you cannot distract your opponent. If he complains to the TD, you could run into some issues.

But yeah, you can eat at the board as long as you're not annoying about it.

The problem i see with stuff like this is, you probably are going to be eating when it's the other persons move. You aren't likely to be eating whilst you are thinking about your move, only after your move, so it's going to be putting the other person off. If it was me, i'd probably resign and walk off. You have all day to eat. A quick swig of water should be enough for anybody.

I wouldn't advise it you'll get crumbs in your key board.

Some tournaments don’t leave enough time to eat between rounds. I’ve done it and seen it done many times. Several times I’ve had opponents listen to music while playing. It annoys me when I can hear the music or when they hum. I’ve had a couple of people reading the newspaper while playing. Maybe I just have a boring style, but the Dragon isn’t that boring...imo.
