Canadians and over excessive apologizing

What is it with Canadians? I was in a chess tournament in Canada, seems everyone apologizes over nothing. They walk too close to you, first thing they say, "sorry!". They lightly brush against you while walking, "sorry!". During my time in Canada, all I hear was "I'm sorry", "sorry!". Hey I just crossed your path, "Sorry!". Sorry, sorry, sorry. I was in Toronto, and that is all I heard from people. No hi, hello, how are you. Just "sorry". They think it is polite to say sorry all the time? It is so annoying. Seems people these days will apologize over nothing, but if they actually did something to you, no apologies. I haven't been anywhere else around Canada, other than Toronto. Maybe it is just Toronto that is rude in Canada? Your thoughts?

Is it because people are too allergic to each other?

Bump! Oh, sorry I bumped your thread. Really, terribly sorry. Sorry for saying sorry so much. Oops, Sorry did it, again!

In order to prove to me that you are actually sorry and not merely saying sorry insincerely I propose you buy me a coffee to make amends for thy transgression.

OPs and thread title redundancies. (too much over excessive superfluity)

That is because they copied it from US, which wanted a beverage not to taste like German beer.  Viva Coca Cola!!!  Canadians just took the US crap and make it crappier, like bacon and (American) football.

It's still 1,000,000 times better than all the crap China produces.

You guys really should learn about quality over quantity,

Saying “sorry,” is not always an apology. It is “politeness strategy — a way to have smooth, norm-abiding, harmonious interactions.”

This is in the Canadian culture of being polite rather than from being passive-aggressive, and this politeness is generally a positive thing.

Americans on the other hand with their super power do not need to apologize for any thing as they hold all the power in the world.

Sorry, the Americans do not say it because they do noy know what it means truly, the British say it but do not mean it, and the Canadians overdo it I agree.

Better to say I am sorry for any physical unintentional contact that just walk by.

Just be prepared as the Chinese rule the world with currently 1.5 billion people out of the 6 billion on earth. Chinese people do not apologize for any of their act they are actually worst than the Americans.

A couple of insights there...

... try to keep a Canadian as a friend for a while without apologizing now and then for trivial incidents or anything. You'll notice that your lack of savoir-vivre and politeness (as it's seen in our society) makes him/her very cranky... :D

@Rickett2222 - Now, you need to say "sorry" to the British, American and Chinese people you just rudely stereotyped. I'm just "sorry" you weren't intelligent to notice the people of all countries in this thread ridiculing the OP for his rudeness and ignorance toward Canadians. :/

I didn't know that, but an awkward way to go about “politeness strategy", kind of stupid if you ask me. I was at a shopping store, I walked past a guy who was kneeling down near a shelve. I walked past him in the aisle, then he said sorry and then looked at the ground. I stopped and said '"what?" Again, he said "sorry ok?", and then pointed to the ground. I swear if I had stayed there longer I would of gotten into an argument with him. Toronto is a strange place.
