Benders are a pain.
Candidates Wildcard

I would not expect Russia to get the candidates and not invite a Russian to the event. But I suppose they have two qualifiers anyway in Svidler and Karjakin.
Aronian is a good choice, and will hopefully bring exciting games. His form has a lot of peaks and troughs, so let's hope that he is nearer to a peak by the time March comes.
"I would not expect Russia to get the candidates and not invite a Russian to the event"
The sponsor is Armenian, so Aronian it is even if it's held in Moscow. Just like the Candidates in London had an Azeri sponsor and picked an Azeri and not an Englishman.

What was all the talk about candidates' in the US and also the world championship in the US?????????????

That makes sense, thanks for explaining.

You reason it away like that, but isn't it rather idiotic to hold an event somewhere and not have local interest in it? Of course in the case of Russia it doesn't matter they already have players in it.
It seems to me if an Azeri or Armenian backs it then it should be held in those places, isn't that logical?
As it is being held in Russia yet again it feels a bit of a failure, chess is still not being successfully expanded through such a major event.

There are different reasons things have turned out like this, when Azerbaijan won the bidding in 2011 and 2013 Aronian refused to play there, and FIDE had the event moved from Azerbaijan. It would have been difficult to sell the idea that the Azeris were forced to pick players from other countries than their own in spite of paying for the whole thing. This time the Armenian billionaire sponsor lives in Moscow and wants the event to be held there, but wants an Armenian to participate rather than picking a third Russian. Not too weird after all.
Aronian played in Azerbaijan recently. I don't see why you would have one player decide whether an event is played somewhere or not in an event like the Candidates tournament.
It still seems a bit strange why an Armenian wants it in Moscow, and the World Championship match was already held there a few years ago anyway so Fide perhaps would welcome somewhere new. I think there would be more buzz in Armenia anyway as they would have never held such a big event.

For all the people asking "Why is it not in the United States?", I don't ever remember Ilyumzhinov or anyone senior from FIDE saying that the Candidates would be held there. It was said that the World Championship would be held in America, and with two players in the candidates, they have a decent chance of getting a player to the match.
(If anyone did suggest the Candidates was in USA, then do let me know :D)

Ilyumzhinov says the world championship match will be in the USA, he proposed giving them the Candidates but he says the chance of it being there is only about 50 percent.
