Canidates Tournament question??

I dont understand the player's mindsets? I understand Aronian might be accepting of a draw against Magnus but i feel like he didnt prepare anything? Aronian should know the canidate's tournament only has one winner and Carlsen will sweep the competition. If Aronian wants to win and challenge Anand he knows he will have to beat Carlsen but instead he just let Carlsen get away?? And Kramnik vs Svidler?? In my opinion the former world champion is in way better shape than svidler why go for a drawish opening like QGD which Alekhine and Capablanca drew with a million times? Doesnt anyone else think these players should be going for more ambitous openings with preparation? You know someone is going to play d4 against you so why not a gruenfeld or a KID or benoni? And kramnik just accepted draw by repetition?? This is a must win tournament! Then Grischuk vs Ivanchuk. Ivanchuk played a passive Catalan and Grischuk just tried to trade everything off?

Im sorry for sounding so angry but ive been waiting so long for this MUST WIN tournament. Its all or nothing for these guys and i dont understand why everyone just wants a draw.

[Oops, yeah Kramnik did play a QGD nvm.]

It's very bad to start with a loss.  Also, if others think you're in bad form (say you start with two losses or something) then they'll all try to win their games against you and it will be even harder.

A draw is a safe way to start.  More chances will be taken in the 2nd half of the tournament.

I was a bit surprised Aronian was so quick to draw with his white against Magnus though.

"Aronian should know the canidate's tournament only has one winner and Carlsen will sweep the competition."

You might want to rethink that statement.

You are so wrong in what you say chessteenager.

They prepare ''everything'' meticulously. Perhaps you should backtrack to the official-site and re-read the players post-match comments?

@chessteenager    Relax the fun's just begun!

BTW concluding the QGD is drawish because Alekhine and Capablanca played it to death back in the 1927 WCH (32 out of 34 games, zzzzzzzzzzz) is  like saying Windows 8 has anything in common with Windows 3.1 (you remember Windows 3.1 don't you?)

And FYI Alekhine won by a score of +6 -3=25 and I'm guessing even with a wider variety of openings Alekhine and Capablanca would still draw about 75% of their games with each other at the height of their powers 57 yrs later the Karpov-Kasparov 1984 WCH ended with a score of +5 -3 =40 in Karpov's favor, with 84% of the games drawn (and QGD was "only" played 20x in this match)

Magnus Carlsen of Norway said: “To say something about that I guess I need to play some more games, and perhaps some longer games as well!" The world’s number one drew rather quickly with world number three Levon Aronian of Armenia.

In what was the top game of the round, Carlsen played the Bogo-Indian and equalized rather comfortably. “In general, Levon with Black, that's as tough as it gets. It's an important game for me but at the same time it's the first round, and sometimes it's going to be quiet.” Aronian said he had “expected a bit more from this game”, but played inaccurately early on and then lost his opening advantage.
