Can't see / use the extra pieces

Hi, playing bughouse, in the start of the game I can use extra pieces from my team mate, then during the game they disapear, I can't see or use them no more. The area where they normally show goeas blank.
Have you ever expereienced? Do you know why - and how to fix?
