You can't really compare different ages, though. Even Fischer said that if Morphy returned today he'd have trouble with some masters. That doesn't mean Morphy wasn't a greater player than Michael Basman or that Babe Ruth, who would probably hit .285 today isn't way greater than Matt Olson, all due respect to both in their own right.

I'd bet on Fischer over Tal or anyone else of that era. It should be plain as day. Yes, Tal beat Fischer when he was 15-16 but he never beat him after 17. Tal is a genius of another sort. Actually, I prefer his games to Fischers for pure delight.

To be honest. In my humble opinion since the founding of the Soviet Union I guess that chess is very manipulated by the guys who rule over this planet. It is just not possible for example that children can compete with elite adults. Thats a biological thing that should understand everybody. Of course it is possible if someone is incredible talented is working like crazy and has professional support from a good teacher. Then a kid can become very good for his age. But he surely cant get elite. Joshua Waitzkin was the best kid from the USA. In the 90s. He had the best possible support. He had an IM as teacher. He worked very hard. And he was very talented. And probably he got some help in form of manipulation and cheating. Nevertheless he had with 12 "only" a rating of 2100. And alone this is incredible.
So I guess the best player was somebody who played before the Soviet Union was found. May be Aljechin? I dont know. Aljechin died when he was reigning World Champion. He died very weird. Death in front of a chess board. They said he drunk too much alcohol. For me thats looking like a murdering. The same with Paul Morphy. Very weird death. And also Capablanca died very young under very weird circumstances. As if somebody was killing certain people because they was too good for his taste. And I know who rule over this planet and I know how he thinks. So its very likely that these guys were murdered. Nobody is killing Carlsen. So I guess he is not very good.
