I think that I found the story you were referring to. Levon Aronian won the 2017 FIDE World Cup on September 27th. He then proceeded to get married a few days later on September 30th.
Captivating Stories from Chess History
Actually that is not it, though that's a great story too! The one I am referring too happened earlier than that. And like I said, I believe the participant was English. I'll keep digging.
I found it! It was Glenn Flear. Here's his wiki with some info about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Flear
My bad, it looks like Kasparov was not in that tournament, but Spassky and Short were.
I'd still love to hear other stories that people find interesting!

Damn also Larsen and Polugaevsky. Those are some big names. I like this story:

That's a fantastic story! Thanks for sharing, I will definitely incorporate that as well.
I'm recounting some of chess's most interesting moments for a writing assignment. I know some chess history, but I'm sure there are countless great chess stories that I'm not aware of, so I thought I'd ask here. What are some of your favorite stories from chess history?
Because I'm writing for a non-chess audience, I'll cover some of the well known ones: Kasparov v Deep Blue, Fischer's "The Applause" from Spassky, etc.
But I'm also interested in lesser-known stories, even fabled ones, e.g. Ossip Bernstein playing a match for his life during the Bolshevik Revolution, and so on.
So, what are some moments or stories from chess history that you find most captivating?
One other question: I remember one story of a player entering a tournament as a replacement on the week of his wedding. The tournament was in England, I believe. The field was very strong and included Kasparov. The player stepping in as a replacement was the lowest rated player and, like I said, it was his wedding week. But he decided to play and ended up winning the tournament. However, I can't for the life of me remember who it was. Anyone know?
Thanks!
