No, I don't think he is going for draws as white, or with black for that matter. I honestly just think he underrated Caruana and what it would take to beat him. Its been a while since he was in this tough of a match and it shows a bit. He has also said that he would rather have the tournament be more games then having to win in rapid, even though he is favored.

Agreed
Interesting theory.
Could be true but i still think they agreed to draw every game and not show up for the armageddon match.
I was away from chess for about a week, and wondered if anyone had heard commentators say anything about Carlsen's strategy with the white pieces.
I'm wondering if he's been playing for a draw with white because he's heavily favored in rapid and blitz chess. He's about 100 higher in rapid, and about 200 higher in blitz.
For example in game 6 his 4.Nd3 in the petrov, and of course today avoiding the sharper lines and going for an early queen trade (and then even more trades with Ng6).
